Hey all!
I guess I've taken a bit of a social hiatus. But I'm alive and well!
So something interesting happened to me today. I decided today was the day I was gonna earn my ton up patch. Everything just felt right and I was already up to speed and feeling comfortable.
So, I'm at 80 on the interstate and I roll up to 90. Then, I decide to roll my wrist up to 100. I get there and cruise for a few and then I pull back down to 80. Well, I figured I'd roll back on and see if I could get back up to 100 again but this time my bike made a "wup-wup-wup-wup" sound when I put a load on it. It felt like it was sputtering.
So, I pulled in the clutch and revved it a few times and all sounded well so I let the clutch back out and tried putting a load back on it and it sputtered again. So I figured it was 5th gear and I would shift down to 4th at my off ramp. I got there and down shifted to 4th and rolled on and it did the same. Now I know it wasn't just 5th gear...
So I came to stop at the red light at the bottom of the off ramp and took a look. Nothing looked out of place (no oil leaking or black smoke or anything).
Then the light turned green and I came through the turn slowly in first and then did about a 1/2 to 3/4 open throttle through 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Everything was fine! She was back to being normal again. Full load didn't phase her.
So, I'm just trying to figure out what happened when I came down off of 100. Did I blow some cobwebs out of her? Did I run her too hard? I don't see myself getting back up to 100 anytime soon but 80-90 is normal sometimes and I'd hate to have to pull off on the shoulder to get back down to first and rest.
What are your thoughts?

She's pissed cause she wanted to hit 100 and didn't. You see, your speedo is off about 10mph above 30 so you were really only doing 90.
Go try it again and report back. Oh...and check your squirrel condoms/vac tubes and tank vent.

From what I understood, having the fatty 120/90 on the front was supposed to correct the speedo problem. I did want to do 105/110 to really seal the deal though. After this little hiccup I'm not sure if I wanna get near it again for a while.

I wonder if maybe you have a dirty fuel filter and the added demand drained the carb bowl too low and then the 2nd demand couldn't be met. Then once you stopped the carbs refilled.

It obviously isn't a black one cause they do the ton easily.

Hmmmmm! I like how that logic falls together! It makes sense! It felt like fuel but it didn't add up to me at the time. Plus with me revving it I thought it ruled that out but going down to 0 RPM and up to 3K RPM quickly didn't prove anything about fuel. It was the sustained load on the motor at 70/80MPH that proved it.

could also be a small amount of blockage in the hidden fuel filter

How many fuel filter's does she have!? LoL
I know about the filter/screen on the fuel pickups for the petcock in the tank. I cleaned those out/off a little while ago. How many more do I need to go through?

It's called a hidden filter for a reason. If I told you how to find it, it wouldn 't be hidden anymore!

I think Ian is on it; it just takes a fly speck in the hidden filter to muck things up. Quote:

You'll find this one hidden in the 'T' joint between the carbs at the end of the fuel line from the petcock. Not easily accessed either which is why I ditched mine and put on an inline Wix filter that I can actually get to on the road.

I asked the guy in the lawnmower shop for a 5/16 inline gas filter He wanted to know what for I told him a Triumph 900 I felt pretty good that he didn't check the book or computer I ended up with a 1/4" filter instead, but I bet you knew that before I typed it
The filter came with an owner's manual - said when it looks like you've been filtering tabacca spittle, change it I said OK then I'm good

I'm not gonna tell you anything about the hidden filter either, but here's a great thread on the topic!

Hey Louis, there was a lot (and I mean a lot) of rust and other debris in your old tank - wouldn't be surprised if some of that had got into the filter either before or whilst you your doing the tank swap....
