Hey i am planning on changing the oil in my america, now i dont know what to go with. I can get a semi or full synthetic lucas 10w-40 or they have a 20w 50 same goes for royal purple. I am having trouble finding a 15w 50 full synthetic at my local stores. Ive found it online but i would rather just get something that works for me that i dont have to order off the internet all the time. So please tell me what your running and what you think of it. and suggestions are more then welcomed Thanks Guys

AMSOIL is the best according to the stats and i use 20/50 but i live in Fl. i guess it would depend on temps where you live, hot temps i think would call for 20/50 but cooler might be a little better with 10/40?? or 15/?? so its ok to run other than specified oil to mfg recommendations, thats what it is recommendation, it just veries as to where you live. when i lived in Mi. i run 10/30 in the winter and a little heavier in the summer but that was back then and i was useing standard oil not syn. hope this helps but i am sure others will chime in and there is a whole section about oil in the archives somewhere, because there have been soooo many ask this question.
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Don't put car oil in your bike.....it will mess up the clutch. If you can find some synthetic for diesel engines that would be better because it does not have the friction enhancers in it. Conventional motorcycle specific oil is OK to use in a pinch too.

I'm running Valvoline 20W50 synthetic MC oil available just about everywhere. Will probably switch to the Rotella 5W40 synthetic stuff for diesels (as posted above) during the winter months.

I learned that mobil makes the Triumph oil, and filters. I use mobil v-twin 20w 50 and m108 filter. Out of 100,000 miles,85,000 has benn with it. Change it every 3-4 thousand miles. Walley world has the best price on oil.Just wish they carried the filter too.

another vote for the Amsoil 20w50 motorcycle oil! According to tests it is one of the 2 best oils out there.

10W40 is fine for all temperatures. That's all I run (Mobil-1 4T), and it gets hot here. I tried the 20W50 one summer and lost about three mpg on my fuel plus I noticed it cranked slower, now it's 10W40 year round.

I used Amsoil Motorcycle 20w50 change before last. This time I tried Motul 300V 4T 15w50. Thus far, I have over 100 miles on this oil. I bought it from corseracing.com.
Compared to the Amsoil, I noticed the shifts seem smoother and the clutch engagement is even moreso. I'm thinking it will be the oil I use on a regular basis and will probably use their products for brake fluid and for my vehicles.
I like Royal Purple, but it's too expensive. I like Redline, but they don't make oil that is JASO MA certified (that I could find). I also like Mobil 1, but I like the idea of using a true full synthetic; Redline, Amsoil, and Motul are some of the very few that are still ture sythetics.
Mobil 1 uses Group III stock, even in their sythetics. Royal Purple uses a blend of Group III, IV, V.
The best bang for your buck is the Rotella T6 Synthetic. It is made for large diesel engines and is even labeled JASO MA on the back. It only comes in 5w40.
I have considered using it in winter if the budget gets tight ($22/gal). KS has sub-zero winters and we've been consistently around 100 the last few weeks in summer.
The Motul was $50 with free shipping.

Are you saying Mobil 1 isn't a true full synthetic? Please give us more info because the Amsoil comparisons always place Mobil 1 as equal or second to Amsoil and way ahead of the others.

The Mobil 1's racing 4T spec oils are the only oils that Mobil 1 make that are actually full synthetic (group 4 and group 5 oils). Everything else Mobil 1 makes is mostly a group 3 petroleum oil blend (with Group 4 and 5 oils) that they call Synthetic. In reality they are just a semi-syn oil. Only a couple of oils out there that are actually full Synthetic, and they cost more. If it doesn't cost at least $9.00 a quart then you are buying a semi-syn oil no matter what it says on the package.
It's what they call marketing..........or rather misinformation.

Oh I see. I was using Amsoil but, because of availability issues, switched to Mobil 1 Racing 4T.

Posted this before and Ian is right, it is overall number 1 in the motorcycle world for both 40 and 50 weight synthetics White Paper. Go to page 23 and 24 for the summary results.

Using oil with no problems is far from using oil that is best for your engine. You can use oil for a long time with no problems but causing more wear and deposits than with a better oil.
