Just had to post about the US Woman's Soccer Team knocking Brazil out of the Woman's World Cup. Not bad for a team that had to play a Player down for half the game. Now they face France on Wednesday.

How many actual americans are there on the team? I heard that the recent US hockey victory only had 3 americans on the team.

Great news!, did any of the USA team happen to take their jerseys off? If so I'll be sure to catch SportsCenter to night.

Women play football???

They'll be playing Rugby next

No, seriously, I've known that they play both for a long time. And when it comes to football (soccer) the women are probably better and more committed. Personally, I can't stand the game, but I am surprised that in a country where you can't get away from the poxy game, the womens games never get a mention, in fact, you hear more about the WAGS, (wifes and girlfriends) of the males than you do about the womens teams. I wouldn't be surprised if one day the News went something on the lines of "Blonde Bimbo wife of Braindead Star Striker (insert real names of your choice) went shopping today and spent ££££££'s on tat while her husband stayed at home recovering from a bruised fingernail and will be out of action for the next six weeks. And on a side note, the England Women's team have won the Womens world cup. Isn't that nice"

Sorry, turned into a rant

Anyway, congrats to the USA and I hope you do well against France

Is that a pro-USA or an anti-France feeling?

I believe there is a rule against it in the male game. This is because the player might have a tee shirt underneath with the wrong advertising.

I know it's the most popular sport in the world but I've never been able to sit through an entire match.

That was an easy look up, American soccer team. This is not pro sport.

I like watching soccer (football). My boys both played, the eldest for 13 years. I love yelling at the ref's, specially when their calls really stink. Yeah, I'm one of those moms that embarrassed their kids every once in a while during their games. Though I never got ejected from the area for my lack of support for the refs.

I understand liking it, I just don't personally. I can't imagine watching golf on TV, either. I'll hear a description of a thrilling golf shot but when I see it on TV...nothing. It's almost as if some non-athletic looking people were hitting a little white ball into a hole. Eye of the beholder and all that. Now, if they had to do it with Dwight Freeny bearing down on them...that might be cool.

At least with Bowling, the ball comes back to you. You don't have to chase all over the country!

That was probably the best game of football(soccer) I have seen in years. Drama ,controversy Disney esq comeback in the final second of the final play. Vindication for the Goalie at the end......wow. It was fantastic, amazing. Such heart from the US side, wow!!

It is a shame that women's teams don't capture much attention. They certainly work just as hard at it. I think this might eventually change with our evolving culture. ( For instance, I can remember when a girlfriend wouldn't even RIDE in a pickup truck, let alone drive one!) I confess to not being a "sports watching" kind of person of any gender. However, I have watched, on occasion, and with interest, a women's beach vollyball competition. Although, I find it hard to keep my eye on the ball...

Oh, I think women's World Cup captures far more attention, in the US, than men's. Do we even HAVE a men's team? I've been hearing sports talk radio talking about Women's World Cup a lot in the past couple weeks. I read that the game was very exciting, if you like that kind of thing. Good for them.

Yes you do, and they're good enough to beat England's finest prima donnas (oops, I meant players), but that doesn't mean much

With all the sports options available it's hard for 150lb guys named Mitch or Skip to capture the nation's attention.

Sorry, but I need to corrrect you there. The England Ladies have never won the Womens World cup. The Quarter Finals is the best they have ever managed.

Only Three nations have ever won the Womans World Cup. USA, Germany and Norway.

1991 - USA
1995 - Norway
1999 - USA
2003 - Germany
2007 - Germany
2011 - ????

If all goes the way i think it will the USA should play Sweden in the Final. Sweden are a good side and have already beaten the US team in the Group stages, but i don't think the US will let the Sweeds get the better of them a second time.

2011 - USA

Think Bryn was getting messed up with the Women's England cricketer Team. They have won the world cup. I watched the the England / France game on the TV and we lost to penalty's after extra time. Which is what most of the England football games end up. By us losing to a penalty shoot-out . We just don't see to have the bottle in a penalty shoot-out. Good luck to the Yankee girls against France. atb geoff

Mark (and Geoff), I was mid rant and being sarcastic.
What I was driving at was that even if the England women did win the world cup, there would still be more coverage about some soccer groupie's latest shopping expedition than there would be about the ladies sporting triumph.

While I admit to doing my best to avoid as much of the game as I can, I do listen to the news and stuff and I was completely unaware the women's tournament was happening until I saw this thread, but I am aware that the buying and selling of players is occuring in the men's game.

BTW, I happen to think that the women are more likely to pick up a trophy than the men
