Anyone had a key made for their bike? Are blanks hard to find, or can you have them made at most hardware stores? I have a 2009 America FWIW.

After the dealer told me the blank was $56, not including having it cut, I walked into the first locksmith store I can across, and got a blank, cut, for $4.

The blank was a Kawasaki blank for the ignition, and a moped blank worked for the fork lock.

Not a "close" match, A PERFECT MATCH.

I went to a local key cutter after none of the regular lock and key folk could/would help me... the key on my 07speedy looks allmost like a bmw but the kid hunted and hunted . cut a copy and GAVE it to me.. said it was worth learning .. knowing for next time... the blank that worked .. perfectly ..was a Subaru ...hope that helps.
it was a mobile shop and I ended up w/ it for nothing.. .
good kid .. still have the Key .. bikes gone gone gone..
me .. still healing .
SUBARU Key is right for at least the 07.. sure its the same for some. let us know !

There used to be a list of blanks in the Tech Vault, darned if I can find it now. All kinds (I only remember a Volvo) of different manufacturers keys would work. Don't know if its the same, but my Tiger takes an Ilco TMC-1. Go to a real locksmith, not a hardware store.

I painted it with a brush from left over rattle can paint after tidying it up with a file and a Dremel. It is solid lead so nice and weighty.

Are you sure the YH47 is the correct key. It seems to be missing a groove. See images.

The key on the left is the YH47. The key on the right is the one that motorcyclekeys.com says is for the 2006 to current America and Speedmaster. The one on the right also matches my key.

Does anyone know what make the key on the right is and its catalog number?

Yea, I saw that too. The first pic is from the Key-men link and the second pic is from the motorcycle keys link. I just wanted to make sure that both will work. The motorcycle key clearly has an additional groove (as does mine).

just found this on newbonneville.com

Note the two types of key blanks. These correspond to the key man (type A) and motorcycle keys (type B).

Which key type depends on you VIN. Make sure you verify which one you need.

Could someone who has purchased a key from motorcycle keys (type B) please post the blank serial number.

Thanks.

Just to update.

Serial numbers up to 246531 (before 2006, type A) use ilco X119 YH47
Serial numbers 246532 and up (2006 and later, type B) use ilco X52. (In N. America it is sold primarily as a SAAB key.)

I got mine done at the local hardware store (used to be a true value) and we used the Kawasaki blank. works great. I never use fork lock so didnt bother. Its the spare in my wallet. almost lost keys on a rally /campout 100 miles from nearest town. Yep that would have sucked.

Any body ever had to order keys from Triumph? My niece stopped by with her very young kids and after they left the keys to my Thruxton were missing. I've scoured the yard with a large magnet, tore my garage apart and dissembled my niece's mini-van. I've tried to interrogate the culprits, but as they are quite mobile they can't speak a language I understand.

FYI ordered keys for the Thruxton from the dealer, they sent the VIN# to Triumph. It took a week and $55.

Can get blanks pretty cheap on Ebay. I forget exactly but they were around $9 I think. I'll post for sure if I see them again.

Blanks won't do you any good if you don't have an original key.

Yes, that's what I had to do. A Triumph dealer orders them from Triumph USA using the bikes VIN#.

And that is what cost the $55? Is that total or is that for the blank?

The $55 is for 2 new stock Triumph keys for my bike, not blanks. It's cheaper than the local locksmith was going to charge, plus they wanted me to pull the lock, (ignition).

If I had an original key I would have just gone to Ace Hardware.

Last I checked Ace and True Value didn't have the blanks and couldn't get them. That really isn't bad for 2 keys from the dealer made from the numbers.

I'm sure my neighborhood Ace has Volvo key blanks, they do a huge key business.

I learned a lesson, I'm putting one of the new keys in my lock box.

I finally got around to having a key made. My local lock shop gave an unbelievable amount of attention to detail, but for 10.50$, cut an Ilco X52 blank into shape. I have a 2009 America, and the Ilco X52 is the real deal. Your local hardware store key cutter may not do as well, but am sure would be cheaper FWIW.

I wonder if dealers have any clue how much damage this kind of stuff does to dealer reps in general. I grew up on bikes in the 70s, dealt with lots of dealers. There was one notable "crook" in my area, but even he wouldn't hold a candle to what passes as ordinary business practice in some shops today.

+1

Had a Ilco X52 (SAA1) cut for about $10 last summer. I went in this spring to get my blank from NewSpeedmaster cut and he came out to the bike and tried a number of other keys and found one that fit better. Unfortunately I forgot which one.
