Beemer got me to thinkin about the first "REAL" concert i ever attended. i mean i had seen chubby checker on the back of a flat bed truck and i had seen some country artist at the fairs but i had never attended a true rock and roll concert untill i saw THE JAMES GANG. WOW!!! i was hooked, so much so, that i went to work part time at the local concert hall as a stagehand. then i got to see just about everybody who was anybody in the 70's. from Hendrix and the Who to E.L.P and Leon Russell, and from Buck Owens to Mr. Blue suaede shoes himself Carl Perkins. Man, those were some great times and i was getting paid to be there. couple of my favorites were Burton Cummings (guess who) as i was able to share a couple of homebrews with him on the loading dock, Deep purple rocked the house but his opener was Buddy Miles who i thought was the best thing i had ever seen or heard to that time. So the question i guess is, what was your first real concert and where was it??
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

Grand Funk Railroad, 1970. Jacksonville Coliseum. A friend worked for Jet Set Productions and told me that they always kept extra tickets under the name "Winnie Gantry" at the Will Call window for last minute guests of the promoter. No ID required - just say the name and how many tickets you wanted. GFR was the first of many free concerts in the ensuing years. Never once questioned. They would have just gone to waste right?

My older sister took us to see Delaney & Bonnie & Friends at the Lenox Music Inn in Lenox, MA. I believe that was the tour Clapton tagged along, but it was a mighty long time ago. The place was a natural amphitheater so people sat outdoors on the sloped bowl shaped lawn. Coolers, BBQs, blankets, & lawn chairs were all permissible. My how times have changed... No walls there to bounce the sound - perfect outdoor acoustics. To the left the Ike & Tina Turner Revue sat on lawn chairs watching the show in their matching sequined suits, awaiting their turn for the evening show. If you think Tina Turner looked good at 40, y'shoulda seen her at twenty something. Saw many great shows there - The Eagles, Bonnie Raitt many times, New Riders, the first Mahavishnu Orchestra, Doc & Merle Watson, Herbie Hancock doing the "Headhunters" tour, Larry Coryell, Taj Mahal, The Kinks, Linda Ronstadt on her first post Stone Ponies Country Music Tour, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. So many greats on their way up stopped there to play. The end of The Music Inn came when the post Duane & Barry Allmans played there, and a 1% gang was hired to do security, which was surprising considering the lessons of Altamont. You could say things got a little out of hand. The local town folk got the torches and pitch forks out after that one. I would imagine there were other issues as well that led to the closing, but I don't know what the deal was entirely. Wolfgang's Vault has a number of concerts recorded there.
The admission price was around $5 or $6, which ruined me for life. For example - my brother in law saw Robert Cray last week for $90 a pop. The Levon Helm show I attended cost $150 a head. I never would have gone if not comped in. Not saying it isn't worth it - just that I can't spare that kind of money for tickets and the other stuff that goes along like food and travel etc.

Guess Who was my first concert back around '72 in Orange County CA.
(...and no, that wasn't a question...there wasn't a question mark at the end of that sentence, now was there?!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

While in the Coast Guard in New Jersey back in the summer of '69, one of my "shipmates" asked me if I wanted to go to this little "music festival" up in New York? I said "why not, what can it hurt". I remember going to Woodstock, I just don't remember getting back or how?
I'm speeding because I have to get there before I forget where I was going.

Alice Cooper Welcome to my Nightmare Concert and I can't remember what year. I do remember that the cues were that long to get in that we climbed the fence out back and snuck in even though we had tickets.

Paul Revere & the Raiders circa 1967. The next one was Iron Butterfly, circa 1968. And many more since.

I actually saw "Iron Butterfly" last year at a really small, outside tavern, here in my hometown. Two of the original members, including Ron Bushy on drums. They were actually very good, sounded like they should, and I could have tossed a peanut onto the stage.

Wasn't my first by any means, but i saw them around that time. Clem Clempson on guitar and friggin' great! This being around the time of the 'Smokin'' LP (30 Days in the Hole era). Steve Marriott was a force to be reckoned with. One of the highlights of my concert going.

And what color was that "____ water", OH! I guess we'll just have to "Listen To The Music" to find out! It's all just a matter of "What a Fool Believes"?

Mine was Black Flag with the Meat Puppets in Eugene, OR in 1984. I think I was a different era than those posted so far.

The winter of early 1970 (six months or so after Woodstock) The James Gang opening for The Who at Philadelphia's Spectrum. The Who were touring the set list that became 'Live at Leeds' and came back for an encore that included much of 'Tommy'. Joe Walsh was brilliant in the opening slot and made me a James Gang fan for life.
