Some of you have expressed an interest in the glass fuel filter that we use on our bike.

I am planing on assembling a dozen or so

I have this one on ebay to see what kind of interest there may or may not be.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...:EF:MOTORS:1123

I hope to post pic's when I get about a dozen different types, including the Jim Beam one like I have, this one, and others with various themes.

The Jim Beam glass's are the hardest to find a filter for, cause there so small. But I keep looking.

Since I don't know exactly how they work, what are the options? Any type of tiny liquor bottle?

What are all the different styles available? I'd be interested in something for Bollox.

Well, it's all pain staking trial and error.

Since I'm NOT out to "corner the market", read on.

First, since their all old, used, vintage pieces, you just have to buy fuel filters off ebay, or what ever source you have. Then you buy misc. shot glasses that you like the looks of. Then you mix & match shot glasses with filter tops until you find glasses that fit the filter tops correctly.

You will most likely have to modify the wire bracket that holds the shot glass (bowl) tight to the filter top.

(sometimes, like the two I've already done, it's a perfect match, no mod's required)

(sometimes, you will need to fab a "bushing" to match the glass to the filter top, or sand the diameter of the glass "lip" smaller, and/or ream the diameter of the filter top larger)

I've found it's about one in twenty-five that just fit as is. Also, it's about one in ten that fit at all!

So, it's kinda like summer bikini's (at least with the one's I wear). You buy tops, you buy bottoms, and you HOPE that one combo stuns the crowd.

Keep in mind, the smaller filters, combined with the smaller shot glasses, usually "fit" motorcycles better then the larger (normal) sized ones, that work best on cars/trucks. And YES, the smaller ones are the harder to find ones.

If ALL this sounds like too much bullshizit to mess with, you buy one from some idiot that spends the time to make them work!

I assume you would like the "Jim Beam" one?

The "Jim Beam" one is great but would be interested in other types if they are not too difficult for you to do. I guess any brand of spirit that has a darker colour such as bourbon. As you say it can become difficult to find the right match so I will leave it to you. I have actually gone with a Bundaberg rum theme on my bike but you probally dont even get that over there.

StevieB, chuckyJ, Tinman, ya'll are the first three on the list.

Let me know, and include some kind of idea of preference;
jarnold
BCarnage
FriarJohn
Keith - maybe a leaf design (Maple, or "other")
teeg

I only have 6 smaller ones, and five larger ones, so this WILL NOT be an "overnight" thing!

Probably jumped the gun by saying ANYTHING before I had a dozen ready to go.

Peace!

If you have a glass (shot glass) you like, sent it. I'll make it work.

Me, I lean toward "liqueur" or "manuf.brand name" glasses.

This would apply to everyone. I'll have "Erle" offerings, but should be able to eventually fit anything you have to a filter! possibly even with-in a years time!

I just did a bit of a search and it seems they are doing them in plastic now. So it is an older glass one we need. Maybe I would have more luck in getting one and then I will send it on to you.

Or maybe the way to go ahead with this is if you do one with a generic clear bottle and then I could source a label from one of the new plastic ones and stick it on your finished product. That would work for me and you would be able to find a suitable bottle easier I would think.

You MAY want to re-evaluate your thoughts.

I figure;

1) vintage filter, $30 (with S&H)

2) shot glass, $10

3) one-off custom made "Work of Art" by the INFAMOUS R. Erle , PRICELESS!!!

$325 + S&H.

Food for thought.

All the vintage filters DO come with clear glass bowls, that one could certainly put any decal, sticker, or etch their own design on. Or even epoxy a hat/lapel pin on. (like the ones I put on my patent badge, see pic)

Now ya'll are thinkin'!

Two MAIN things to keep in mind, weather you want one from me, or you make your own.

1) It's going to HAVE to fit somewhere vertically between the fuel petcock and the carb.

2) You'll have to find SPACE for it! Which is why the smaller the better. The larger one like I have on ebay probably would be a problem for a mid size motorcycle. Remember, the "Jim Beam" one I have is a small one. (like the size of the cheap. plastic Royal Enfield style that are popular on ebay and from Steadfast.

I really wouldn't want to invest my time searching, bidding, buying, finding compatible pieces, and making small modifications for anything less than $85 to members.

That's why I have one on ebay, to see what the interest/value will be.

I hope no one feels slighted, but I would do one for FJ, Zdenko, and Richard at cost. John for all he does to keep this site the way it is, and Richard & Zdenko cause they both DONATED free parts to me.

Where can I find cool vintage (reproduction?) shot glasses? Something with the character of the Jim Beam one, but I don't want Jim Beam. I suppose ebay is the place, eh?

That's the only place I know that has THOUSANDS at all times.

I get those Jim Beam's, two in a box, for about $10, but most are one for $10-20, after S&H.

Any with skulls already etched into them? I cant say I've ever seen something like that here, but I stay away from shopping centers or malls as you call them, and $85 isn't a bad price, what did the fuel filter originally come off?

I'm not finding much on ebay that I like. My search-fu is failing me so far:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Shell-Oil-promo-vint...=item2311f10c7e

http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Federal-Pell...=item35b2851d31

It's not Crown, but it's Canadian Whiskey
http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Walkers-Cana...bb#ht_500wt_891

I'll keep looking. I suppose I could be cool to get the Triumph logo etched into a plain shot glass. Or I could find one from my alma mater, CSU.
