Hey guys and gals,
I am taking a trip from Toronto to Calgary and then Whitehorse on July 8th. I have ~3 weeks for the trip.
Anyone got any info on road conditions, things to see, things to avoid, general tips, thinks I should take, anything else you can think of?
Thanks, jason

Bill (Bill) has come cross-continent from Toronto. I'm sure he'll have some good advice.

I'll look at my notes but the first thing i'd say is that ontario is very very wide and runs out of ptetty around thunder bay. I went on through dryden and kenora into manitoba because i wanted to see the places i only ever hear about in cbc weather reports but i can't really recommend it. There were stretches of gravel two-lane on the trans canada! Consider ducking south for a bit at thunder bay and crossing back into canada below winnipeg.
What time of year are you going?

Hi bill,
i was planing to go on july 8th.
i already committed to driving, so its my little truck or the bike. i drove in the truck years ago from southern California to Fairbanks and then to Cincinnati. i remember there being many semi's on the gravel passing me pretty fast. i though it was paved by now though.
let me now what you find.
thanks!!!

Hey Jason... that is gonna be an awesome trip! Firstly I was surprised to hear what Bill had to say about the Trans-Canada around Kenora being gravel!
So Bill, was that just a temporary situation due to road construction or something? The last time I drove across Canada was maybe 1978 but I don't remember hitting gravel anywhere along the way.
Okay, back to you Jason. The Alaska Highway is superb as you may know from your California to Fairbanks trip (not sure which route you took). You'll connect in one way or another to Mile 0 of that highway at Dawson Creek so I'll just throw this out...
Plan you trip so you can end up in Nelson for the RAT Raid on July 14-17th. Then head North from there to get to the Alaska Highway and get a huge hit of Supernatural BC in the process. Nelson is 8 hours from Calgary just so you know. I figure if you have to get to Dawson Creek anyway, why not do it through BC (far more interesting than Alberta) AND meet a whole lot of characters from this forum in Nelson?
An added bonus for coming out to BC... you can attend my Pre-RAT Raid bash and spend some time with the dancing girls. Oh and another bonus... you will have the opportunity to pass through Liard Hot Springs (be sure to google it) which will blow your mind. It's so amazing it should be considered one of the great wonders of the world!
