Hey all!

Alrighty... weird question and I'm not sure if it's normal or not since I'm a bit of a noob with riding (my beautiful America is my first).

I had a situation in traffic where I had to slow down pretty quickly because of someone taking a right turn. I think I was doing like 45-50mph on the way up and then had to start braking down to like 10-15mph. Once I got the situation under control I started to get myself in the right gear. I think I came down to 2nd or 3rd and started to let out the clutch. It felt like I was in neutral. I gave it some gas but the engine just revved. I then up shifted because I thought I was in neutral and it put me into 4th I think. Then, I popped the gear's down twice and got back into the swing of things.

So, when I was at a few red lights on the way home I decided to see what happened with, the tranny and shifting just to make sure it was all okay.

(here's where I'm not sure if it's right or wrong...)

At the red light at a complete stop, if I try to shift all the way up or down it doesn't. I can get maybe one or two gears out of it before the shift control just wiggles. It just moves up or down slopply. I have to let the clutch out a tad and then I can hear it slip into gear and then I can continue shifting.

Is that normal at a stop? Are there any concerns here?

I have also found the false neutral position between gears a few times. I don't worry about it, just shift again and all is well.
Ive never done it for kicks so I cant speak to the real question here.

I can say that it most often happens with a lighter weight oil and with certain oils. This is the main reason I run Amsoil vs. Mobile 1... but I have no scientific proof of my speculations here.

Yeah its normal, it's the way bike gearboxes work.

Just don't keep on doing your experiment or you might create a false neutral for your bike to jump into when you least expect it.

Thanks! I definitely won't be testing that one out now that I know it's normal.

Just so it makes sense to me... how does it create a false neutral?

It pays to be physically definite (not delicate) with your gear shifts. You are less likely to hit a false neutral. The gears are not delicate.

I wouldn't think that you could create a false neutral. Sometimes they just happen if you're a tad hesitant shifting. Or if you try to shift too quickly. A firm toe will greatly lessen any chance of false neutrals.

Also make sure your shift linkage is tight. I had it loose and it gave me problems with not shifting good.

Safety boots and big toes style shoes seem to be my Nemesis when seeking clean gear changes and avoiding false neutrals.

In gear, fuel off, steering lock on and careful my mufflers don't rub against the kerb.

I agree with this suggestion. Pay particular attention to the heim joints on the shifter rod. A lot of wear in those will definitely increase the false-neutral occurrences! Ask me how i know...

Also, if your clutch is not adjusted right, it will be harder
to find neutral at a stop, because it drags a little.
Adjust down on the left side of the engine, not on the handlebar.
