On the Bennington rally I noticed my bike had developed a noticeable steering wobble on deceleration. I had seen the same thing two summers ago when my steering head bearings were going so I raised the front end today and sure enough there's a major notch in the steering at center.

The thing is, the first set of bearings lasted to 50,000 km (30,000 miles) and these haven't gone 12k (8k miles). Should another set be good-as-new? or does something else in the forks get worn out?

Also, I remember thinking that the replacement triumph bearings looked pretty skimpy and I know moe reserarched tapered needle replacements. Has anybody installed these and with what results.

By the way, this is all reminding me of why i trade my cars at five years.

Bill,
I replaced both mine and Karens head bearings with the allballs tapered bearing kit. The only hard part is getting the bearing race off the lower yoke. A press comes in handy for that.

I did mine cause I kept eating front tires, I did Karens for peace of mind not cause she had an issue.

Well I guess I should pay attention to this tread AND others like it from the past. After changing tires, using different wheels, meticulously checking rear wheel alignment and tire pressure... and looking for any loose play in the steering head (no play there, btw) I too have front end wobble. I'll need new bearings too Bill... only for you it's a new set AGAIN!!

Btw, I did my install at the 30k mark. No ride issues, I just thought it should be done. When I had the OEM ball-bearing race out, it looked terrific. Your set should have lasted a lot longer, someone must have not installed to the right tension.

I got mine here: http://www.allballsracing.com/

They have our bikes listed in the selector function.
