Out for a ride on a B-E-A-utiful Sunday. The forcast looked good for the rest of the week so I figured I'd ride to work all week.

On my way home on Sunday. About a mile from home, my left K&N filter pod decided to "Go it's own way" while I was doing about 110k/h. I made a quick loop back to see if I could find it, but it was gone.

I've ordered a new pair from Brent but I was wondering if anyone has tried a mod to make the filters a little more permanent on the carbs. I was even thinking of riviting some kind of wire or cable to each of them so even if they came off they would stay with the bike? (like the string your mom would sew to your mittens and lace through your coat sleeves. Or was that just my mom?)

Thanks for any suggestions, NR.

Hey! When you are 4 years old, it's incredibly easy to lose a mitten in 2 feet of snow...

John (Friar) had this to say in his "BANG YOU'RE DEAD thread....

Quote:

I don't think I mentioned, but it backfired so hard through the right carb it blew off the air filter (safety wired, of course).

So at least one of us around here has a safety system rigged up for the filters.

Safety wire. I have a picture somewhere, from several years ago when I used thin speaker wire. Now I use regular safety wire. Here it is...

After I lost one of my pod filters, I was going to try the safety wire. Instead, I decided to try something different. I cut a strip of self-adhesive sand paper and wrapped it around each carb and then slid the filter over top and tightened. So far so good - the sand paper gives the pod filter something to grab on to - I can tug on the filter and it doesn't want to come off. I was worried the adhesive may not stick after a while but its been a month and no problems yet. You may want to try that if you don't want to use/see the safety wire.

It would be nice to have a chrome or black brace that would clip over the back of the filters. Where is Tom with his CAD drawings?? I think it might be time to expand out of just battery relocation.

If you read the post in the link from the last thread, it talks about me buying another set which I did.

What I did different this time was:

I made sure the carb rim which the K&N fits to was completely clean.

I also bought wider SS clamps that were virtually the same width as the rubber on the Filter.

The next part was crucial. When fitting the new filters you need to ensure they are pushed as far onto the carb rim as possile. The mistake I made the first time I fitted the older ones with the less wide clamps was, the permanent indention wasn't as far onto the carb rim as possible making it much easier for the clamp to in effect, tighten off the rim.

That's why the first imprint needs to be with a wider clamp where it's not possible for it to be anywhere other than on the entire area of the pod filter's rubber.

Would a clamp like this work, Stacka? It's just a matter of time before I go with duel K&N filters and well... I'd like the clamps to look as good as possible.

just lost 1 too!! these filters are crap! the neck of them turns to stone & they pop off as you try to clamp them on. Anyone know of a equal size replacement? I was gonna look into amsoil filters to see if they make something. Any other suggestions?

I've been running these K&N Pods for nearly a decade and once I learned how to properly install them I had very few problems. I haven't gone to great lengths, no inserts, no special clamps or anything. The safety wire isn't that hard to do.

Also, these filters are technically a little snug by 1 or 2mm. Doesn't sound like a lot but it amounts to them wanting to pop off if you don't do it right.

Thanks for all the input folks. I am awaiting my new filters and I think I will go with the safety wire idea but with my own twist. Thanks again all. NR
