I have been trying to help a guy get his 02 america running properly. He rescuded it from a failing BMW dealer who was being evicted by the police. Any way I been talking to him on the phone mostly to get it together. So I get over to his house and this thing has all the get up of a 50cc scooter. The vacuum slides are pitted up but move freely, the plastic clips that go in after the needles were over the hole in the diaphram. I got that sorted out but still not much improvement. He is reluctant to pull the carbs but I am thinking some thing is plugged up in there. It idles well but revs up like the exhaust is plugged up. He says he pulled the slip on off and ran it and it was bettr but not completely better. Any ideas of where to go next?
He will not just let me take it and fix it because he is worried about the price. I want to help him he is an old military vet and ex-cop. So I am trying to just help him without taking over.

I would say if it's been sitting for a while, the carbs need to be pulled & cleaned - good house-keeping, can't do any harm & only potential upside

Wouldn't hurt to look for nests in the silencers and the air box if it has been laid up a while. Might as well drop the bowls (the right side is dead simple to get to) and look at the gunk...that will give you good direction on cleaning requirements without too much work. Then just flat out replace that inline filter with something like a Wix 33027, (just insure that the filter you choose isn't for high pressure fuel injection). Maybe the pull the petcock, too, and clean the screens if it's really been sitting up.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Quick side story on that note: My buddy bought a Vulcan on Fleabay that had been sitting in a shed for two years. When he got home, he found that the air cleaner was packed full of acorns.

All good advice, when you get it all cleaned out run some Seafoam through it to clean out carbon deposits. Available at your local auto parts store. This stuff works !

whats the best way to get moister out of the crank case? obviously an oil change is in order, but to remove the humidity from the crank case before putting in new oil would be nice.

Ride it! Gotta get it hot enough to vaporize and expel the water. 2 Oil changes may be in order. Before and after a ride. Maybe someone makes an additive to address it. I'm not aware of one though.

I agree with bill, put some cheap oil in it ride it long enough to get it good and hot then ride it home and change it out for nice good quality Amsoil. (put good oil in it for the first change too if you have the money, I would.)

are you real sure that it is running on both cylinders. i know that is a odd question but i just helped a friend of mine figure out his trouble and what we found is that the bike ran, but it ran like you are describing. no guts and seemed like a fuel problem. he had worked on it for days before i showed up with a spark tester and found that it was running on one cylinder. like i said, the bike ran but had the symptoms you describe so that is why i asked the question.as to the oil question, like what has been said, i like running new oil and filter for a few miles then change again and in a 100mi or so change the filter again. i wouldnt worry about changing oil again but it might take a couple filters to get it right then maybe change everything again after the milky is gone. but check and make sure its running on all cylinders with the no guts situation.
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

May be an obvious thought, but have you smelled the oil to be sure its not gas mixed with the oil making it cloudy? That would lead back to carb issues as well...

Its hitting on both cylinders. 10/4 on double oil change.

No problem. When i asked FJ to upload it, i thought it was gonna be unique. Didn't realize it became part of the pool...

Uh huh. I had it put in the pool years ago. No prob I'm gonna give FJ some dough for an exclusive.
Check the spark to be sure Chad. It's hard to tell if it's hitting on both by sound. Or touch the headers, if one side is missing it'll stay cool.

I don't think I uploaded that one. That predates my administration of the site (mods can't upload avatars).

Yeah. Phil did it, along with about a dozen others that I asked him to. That was shortly after the DIY avatar debacle
