I'm sure this topic has been discussed ad nauseum, but I was curious if someone can explain why the paint gets funky around the cap, why they made it this way and what the solutions is.

Gasoline fumes curdling the lacquer. These are not lined tanks, most bike tanks aren't, so were the paint meets the fuel...paint damage. It's normal. You might want to peel it off so it doesn't flake and end up in the tank. Some have removed it and painted with epoxy.

Yup Kris... it happens on our tanks. Not to worry though... just try to keep it clean by removing the flaky stuff with your fingers. The rest will be caught by the mesh filter within the tank at the petcock. Even then the 'hidden' filter will catch it. And while on the topic of filters... a lot of us here including me, have removed the hidden filter and added an inline filter between the petcock and carbs. If a bit of that flaked off stuff breaks loose, at least it can't get through to the carbs.

Okay, cool. I'll carefully remove what's flaking off and then watch it. Thanks.
