so i had my side panel chromed, it looks great (pics to follow) but my concern is that whatever they use to cover the panel in order to chrome it, folds over to the back of the panel, and it seems really thin (mind you just on the back) it is cracked in areas and even blistered in some. now i called the place and they said it was the nature of the covering, it is thin metal and when you get the the end of it, it does that; but it should not 'come loose' closer the edge, nor lead to problems on the front. does anyone know enough about this process to either back them up or help me call BS?

I don't have any advice but was interested in the same thing. Would love to see a pic what it looks like if you get the time. I don't really understand the process but can you now polish it with chrome polish to make it shine?

You said a tin piece was folded over .but it was plated before this -------the tin that is.Plastic plating is as i stated it is plastic that has its own chrome , put on it. Theres also another way, to do this, and its called powdercoat chrome---and also, there is ceramic coating that is put over the plastic not really sure about the latter.
Call a header coating place and ask them then you will know. hth

I loaned my camera out to my sis-in-law, as soon as she is back from her trip i will post some pics. the side panel on the outside is 100% perfect show chrome, really brilliant. the inside just gives me pause; but i am very fussy so it is probably just me. i found scratches on my lamp bucket last night, my buddies couldn't see them and told me i need medicated...they are prolly right.

You all might want to Google a new chrome process or paint or whatever they are calling it. Magic Chrome. It is suppose to allow anything to be chromed. You prep a part with their primer , then paint it on with a spray gun. Then clear it. A pints worth was listed at $175. I thought it sounded like it might be a cheap way of doing several pieces. I saw something on classic cars in jay leno's garage that was something similar but I'm not sure if it is the same thing.

I like it. Then again I say there is no such thing as enough chrome. Have you ever tried the Garden Gate/Harmonic Triumph badge? That theme would look fabulous with them. Sample here

Thanks for the pics Bill. Cover looks good.
I noticed the quick attach on your shield. What type of mount and shield do you have?

That looks like a Victory shield. Probably a Memphis application.

Gregger et al, ok here is the skinny on the windshield...mind you i had to learn some of this the hard way... the shield you see on my bike is a Memphis Fats, the mount is for a Suzuki Marauder. i got mine from fasteddy (best price, best deal, best service) http://www.fasteddysports.com/ if you are looking to get one i would strongly suggest calling eddy and talking to him, he can advise you on the height etc...trust me, take his advice he knows of what he speaks. i thought i needed a 17 inch so i could look over top it; but eddy told me i would be better with a 19 and look through it...i have the 19, no buffeting no rain in my face... if you find someone who polishes metal the aluminum mounts polish up really nice. now (and here is where i had to learn things the hard way) what kit you get, depends on your year. if you have an 06 or older, you get the Memphis Fats from eddy, BUT if it is 07 to 10 you can get a switchblade from National cycle (you want what is called the chip special) any of their shields with: Mounting Kit - Q102 Tapered Top Strap (x2) - 73 37-370173-000 Tapered Bottom Strap (x2) - 73 37-371174-000 i have the directions on how to apply somewhere MIND YOU THIS WILL NOT WORK ON 06 OR OLDER (do you get the idea i bought one and couldn't get the d@mn thing on?) hope this helps!

This is the process i was speaking of, when this fellow thought i was being obnoxious, I have chromed about everything in my life of hotrods and kustom show kar winners, I saw this first on Edelbrock engine intakes, its beautiful stuff and it endures heat very well. its cheaper than[and what isn't cheaper] than real chrome anymore. Polishing the lower as someone mentioned here, will be a big disappointment in a couple of riding seasons. This chrome coating is/ or sounds like the best investment unless you feel like taking the front all apart again. We used to polish aluminum firewalls[t-buckets etc] and it was a bad deal.jmo--hth someone.

i never said anything about you being obnoxious. i had a question about a process i had already had done (hence the shoulda coulda), not what i SHOULD have done...well that and telling me it was plastic, when anyone can tell it is plastic is a little obnoxious sorry if you took my reply the wrong way. in any case the triple plate process that http://www.mmmetalizing.com/ did is great, hard as a rock. the back of the side panel looks like crap; but that is a byproduct of the process and i have been told by M and M that if will not peel or bubble on the front.

OK ---The backside of any part plated , powdercoated , painted whatever. This will always be a sore spot with some fellas, those who are doing the coating never seem to care about the"backside"of a part.I have never liked, and always mentioned this to those involved, i never did get an acceptable answer about why they don't spend time,on the backside, when they charge so much in the first place.
Yeah-- if the front don't peel on the edges, due to the preperation of the part, and don't soon end up looking like the backside.Alls Well

yeah that was my major concern. it has been on for a month or so, gotten wet a few times and all seems ok. mind you they are really good, and they know it, so they are a surly lot; but they do nice work...on the front side. the nicer of the two gents...robert?...said that it should be fine, he said that hardly anyone guarantees chrome plastic; but in alluded to being taken care of if on a slim chance anything went bad.

Guys who've done there here have never said anything about it being a PITA. But if you really want to ensure hassle free years ahead, why not get them clear anodized.

i would think aluminum would be too brittle for such and application. BUT, if they turn out to be aluminum i will send them to be coated in chromex at dymanic.

No, but I do plan on doing a better job of polishing them someday. Maybe next winter, when I'll have my very own garage.

i stand corrected, ssjones says aluminum too...i am considering chromex, typically for exhausts, but sticks to anything and way cheaper than chrome http://www.performancecoatings.com/index2.html
