I had to take my TBA to the shop yesterday to get a new rear tyre fitted (that's how we spell tyre in the land of Oz). It was the first time I've seen or even heard my bike in motion by someone else as it was ridden by the mechanic onto the lift. I felt like a proud dad watching at my kid's graduation ceremony. I think the mechanic (not a Triumph dealership) enjoyed riding something a little different as well judging by the gin on his face? Just wondering what other readers thoughts were when you saw or heard your mount being ridden by someone else?

FJ nailed it. With my '81 CB900F I didn't care so much. It looks like it was bought from the set of the Road Warrior. But my Triumph is a different story. I let BFCG take her down the road and back the first night I got her and it was cool to see her in motion, but the whole time I'm thinking, "Be careful, be careful, be careful..."

+1 - unless it is Chy, and then I don't mind it.

PES rode mine at the last Arkansas Rally, I had his T-Bird. I figured if he hit a dog or anything, I would just drop his on purpose.

My buddy rode mine home after I fell off a fence (in '02) and was released from the ER. I'm half out of it as his wife drives me home, following him on my bike. That cut right through the concussion-fog that was in my head. I trust him implicitly but still...

It all depends on who that someone else is. My buddy Phil(the guy with the collection of about 15 classic motorcycles in SoCal, who I'm sure I've told you folks about before) and his wife Diana came out to Prescott last fall for a visit. We took turns riding my BA and Street Tracker over the local mountain roads, and I had no fears at all that he was going to dump 'em.
Gotta say it's really cool to hear how they sounded from behind as Phil took off in front of me.
(...ya know, you never really know how your bike sounds to others until you do somethin' like this!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Dwight got it right, I never appreciate my BA as much as when I see someone else ride it by me. It's a beautiful machine in motion and the sound of those Septres are totally different than being in the saddle. I've let very few ride it, rule of thumb is that if I wouldn't lend you my bird dog you don't ride my bikes.
Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit on his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats.

Well, last year Brent (BCarnage) rode both my bikes and I, his. The day I lent him my America to go fetch something back in his room I, like John looked on with a certain curiosity. "Okay," I thought... "she is just so beautiful." Yeah, I felt proud.

I know we all think if something is going to happen, it had better be me and no one else. I just can't live that paranoid. I assume it will be good, and if something happens, then we deal with it. I loved riding behind Keith and hearing my pipes from behind (yep, still loud). Keith had let me ride his Trophy and his America.

Very well put FJ. Even with my best most trusted friend and I trying each others bikes, there's pride and the "how beautiful it is" factor of looking at my bike, but still a little nervousness until I'm in my own saddle again

I figure swapping bikes is about like swapping wives. You got one I got one you ride yours I'll ride mine. However, I allowed a good technician ride mine once to see if he could help me diagnose a problem.
I have never been one to allow some one to drive my cars or ride my bikes. Not because of fear I just never saw the purpose of it.
After all there is nothing that cant be fixed if you wreck or break something. My friends are all good people and if they break someting they will fix it no problem. I don't hang out with lesser people.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.

Other than dealers, no one has ridden my America or R3 since I've owned them (the R3 was brand new, the America an ex-demo with 300 miles). Also, other than loaners and rentals, I don't ride other people's bikes either. Only friends offer and I wouldn't forgive myself if I chucked it up the road

I'd forgotten that! That's 'cause I trust you to ride it. BTW, the R3 did look a bit big for you

Yep, my riding buddy and my brothers, no problem, because I'll be following on their bike. We swap all the time anyway to double check that last "fix". I'd feel plenty comfortable with anyone here as well. A total stranger? Hmmm, not so much...

Only two people have ridden my bike. The first was Pat(dinqua). I Asked him to take it for a test ride so he could see if was set up right. The second was Phil (bonnyusa) who had flown up from Fl. to the Nor' East rally a few years ago and was going to take Pat's wife's Magna for a ride so I let him take mine instead.
if life gives you lemons keep them because hey, free lemons.

Apart from a mechanic who's doing a test ride, the only person I would let ride my bike would be someone who would be willing to leave their balls behind so I stomp on them if anything went wrong.
Anyone of a female persuasion would have to suggest an alternative
And I would still suffer abject terror
