Stacka, I share your distrust of mechanics. The only bloke I have found that's trustworthy and who knows our bikes and is respected in Brisbane is Skip in south Brisbane. He's the bloke who did my dyno tune and you'll find his contact details on my dyno printout (in this forum). I got onto him through the Ratbags - a now defunct group of Triumph riders in Brisbane (Benny introduced me to them) - and they all sang his praises. I would certainly trust him with your rebuild.

Hi there Richard. Thanks for the tip on the bloke you trust in Sth Brissy. Word of mouth from blokes like yourself and Benny who like me would have searched for a trustworthy mech' from trial and error gives me another option which I'll keep filed away cos you never know do ya. I bought my Triumph manual to work hoping to read through it, but we've been too busy so maybe night shifts will be the go. Also, thanks Frank for your opinion on tearing down the top end not being too difficult. Little snippets like that helps build a picture which so far has only been positive regarding the idea of doing the work myself. I can also only imagine anyone out there in garage land who has done some of their own mechanical work would appreciate what a buzz I'd get if I was able to rely on myself to do what several years ago wouldn't have even crossed my mind. Anyway thanks all for your comments and suggestions, I'll be sure to update as I go along.

Hey Stacka - despite my recommendation of Skip, I encourage you to do it yourself. Think how great you'll feel having accomplished this yourself. You'll be the man we all go to for advice when our turn comes round. I know you'll do the research and study required - so you'll definitely do a better job than most mechanics (who don't study up on particular vehicles and just take a brutal and gung-ho approach to wrenching). As long as you have the right tools and the time you'll do a great job. Think of it as a big mechano build.

Hey Richo, thanks for the vote of confidence buddy. You realise you've now thrown down the challenge gauntlet to Stacka don't you? Thanks Still, I've got every intention of doing the research on this thing, but if I get cold feet and think it's bigger than I thought or whatever, I'll have to reserve the right to wimp out so to speak. After all, a bit of lost pride isn't such a big deal these days if the alternative makes me look sillier than I look. One things for sure, I'm really looking forward to us all meeting up at OzBam where I'm sure there'll be some interesting chats about stuff like this. Not that far away now either. Btw I really liked your suggestion Quote:

Stacka, have you got a trailer for your bike? My thought is to try to do everything I can myself, and if I get into a real bind I can always load the bike onto my trailer and take it to a good mechanic. It may surprise you what you can accomplish, and with the trailer you're never at a loss for finishing the project. Just my two cents worth.

That's a good suggestion Stan but no, I don't have a trailer any more. I got rid of it when I got my Toyota Tray Back ute (Ute = utility for my OS brothers). If you don't know, a ute is like an F-250 with a 2 person cabin and the rest being a tray with sides. Mine is half the size of a F series truck though. Anyway, whilst my bike would fit on my ute, I wouldn't be game to try to drive it up there or worse, back it down unless I had people on both sides to prevent me toppling over if I lost my balance. The idea though is to be pretty certain I can do it myself and looking at the manuals, it does look pretty straight forward. I just wish I'd seen someone else do it. We firies are a bit monkey see, monkey do type blokes where having seen something done once, it takes the guess work out of the equation if the manuals are a bit ambiguous etc. So I don't have that experience but what I do have is two manuals in the Triumph workshop manual, the Haynes manual, Pat's (Dinqua's) destructions which is worth it's weight in gold. I'm also still looking for some of the content Zdenko referred to on the RatNet forum which if I find should re-informce the other info, and finally I've got the blokes on here to ask questions to if all else has failed. I've also got a good mechanic mate over in Western Australia that used to be a member here but went to the dark side and bought a T-Bird. He's one of the best blokes I know for helping out and what he doens't know isn't worth knowing. So all in all, I'm starting to feel more confident this will be an adventure that'll hopefully won't have too much grief associated with it. Again, just take my time, write notes if necessary, take pics along the way, ensure I have lots of clean space for laying out parts, stuff like that. Real methodical. Anyway, there's been a lot of talk hasn't there but not much action. Then again, it's the preparation that sets up a successful outcome and that's what I'm doing.

I have an idea, you get all your parts lined up, wait until it is winter here in the northern half of the world and I will just come down there then and help you build the motor. We'll do the head work there. Air fare should be less than the shipping an subsequent taxes.

Sounds like a good plan Micah. I would just prefer to do it myself but. How about if I get into troubles, I pay for you to fly over here for an hour or so to fix it for me??? I'll have to provide you with an on call allowance too, is that alright?

an exchange involving beer could probably be worked out.

As long as it's VB, the elixir of life (is that alright Frank ) You know, one factor and one factor alone that undermines this great country of mine and that's what we refer to as "the tyranny of distance". Just think how good it would be to spend a few weeks you teaching me the tricks involved in doing this thing? Especially with a few beers on hand. Alas, I'm going to have to teach myself with the aid hopefully of not too many mistakes. Actually I'm still working out all the details for the cost of shipping the head etc to and from the U.S. and it's scary money I'll work it out one way or the other but how lucky are you guys in the U.S. Hey? Well priced, top quality and no enormous shipping costs

Stacka, If I the choice between not breathing or drinking VB, VB wouldn't get a look in.
