I wanted to check in to see if anyone has tried, and been successful in removing the America decal on the right side cover? I would prefer if it was totally black.

Yep, a few folks around here have done that, Michael. However, because these decals are under a layer of clearcoat, the only way to do this is to first sand off said clearcoat and decal, and then repaint the whole shebang.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Under the clearcoat, that's kind of what I thought. Roadworthy, yours looks great! How did you do that?

well, I had a whole thread on here about it and where I got the decal, but I can't seem to locate it using the search function right now...

I thought the decal on my '06 was under clearcoat too, but last weekend, I picked at the edge (fingernail) and it came right off. There is a small indentation where the decal was, but it's not that noticeable. Of course, my bike's nowhere near as shiny as Roadworthy's.

My other plan was to wrap the sidecover in leather - might still do that.

I removed mine but didn't like the black, so had it colour matched to the bike. Still too plain so I had a new decal made and fitted.

That indentation is the hole in the clearcoat where the it came off with the sticker.

After re-reading, I see that my original post was misleading. What I should have said was that the clearcoat came off cleanly with the decal, all in one piece - not all raggedy like I've experienced when removing decals in the past. With some careful buffing, I may be able to smooth the edges. If not, the area is just slightly larger than the Bonneville stickers available out there if I go that route.
