This may have come up in some other form, but since my Betty thread has been a fun one, I thought I would start this. Who are your TOP MAN’S MAN choices? I will start with the obvious classics Clint Eastwood As Harry Callahan and bad ass cowboy! The whole RATT PACK http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat_Pack Steve Mc Queen No intro needed Lee Marvin Can you say “The dirty dozen” John Wayne As the cowboy star Rock Hudson (Who knew he was gay back then? NO ONE) Carry Grant Modern entries Mel Gibson (even if he is crazy lately, he rocks) Vin Diesel Burt Renynolds (Hooper Smokey and The Bandit, original Longest yard) Chow Yun-Fat (any of his stuff)

Soooo a man's man is someone who cries off serving his country to further his acting career, infects others with a deadly disease because it would ruin his ego to admit to being gay, be convicted of spousal abuse, use organised crime connections to further one's career, pose like some entry in a gay calender dripping in baby oil. The real men's men is the junk food eating, beer swilling farting, belching bloke who makes you laugh down the pub, lends you a spanner, backs you up when you are in a bit of bother and gives unwanted advice on how to do something. So probably most of us. Not a guy who has to read it off a script first. If you must have a name though.........Homer Simpson.

Paul Newman would be fit the criteria. I've also heard from "someone who knew someone who knew" Nick Adams (of Johnny Yuma fame and friend of James Dean) was described as a man's man. And i would include James Dean even though he portrayed a bit more complexity.
I just thought of Vic Morrow and James Garner as well, to add to some of the ones already mentioned.

Whoe... that was a mind-furk! Here I am looking at the title of this thread, and I'm kinda stumped for a while trying to figure it out. At first I thought... okay, it's addressed to women as in, "Hey gals, who is your man's favorite man?" And well, my mind hit the gutter as I struggled to resolve the question at hand. Anyway, your man's favorite man you ask... Well I loved Graham's post where he boiled it down to ("if you must have a name") Homer Simpson. Then I got to thinking for a lot of us that guy just might be a father, a son, a grandson, a nephew or friend. Heck, it could even be Eddy (thanks again, man)!! It could be anybody because anybody can be and just might be, a hero. Someone to look up to, someone to inspire and aspire to. Someone who made or makes a difference in life, your life, our lives. The other day I was out for brunch with a friend (Randy) of 45 years. He leaned over the table and said to me as 'matter-of-fact-ly' as he could, "Keith, please don't think anything's wrong 'cause nothing is, but I just want you to know it's been a privilege and an honour to be your friend all these years." He finished with, "Sometimes we just don't say the things we should, and then it's too late." To me I'm just a guy... Randy is a giant amongst men! And the Duke of course, right Kathy?

John Wayne had two of the best Man's Man quotes (don't remember which movies)
#1- I won't be lied to, I won't be cheated, and I won't be laid hands on. #2- If you won't respect your Elders, you'll respect your betters. (He then punched out his son Patrick)

Sorry Beamer, wasn't intentionally trying to be rude, just exercising an opinion.
I was just suprised that so many people went for actors, when the world was, and is, full of blokes who have done more than read an autocue or script to do so many amazing things.

Non actors - Lincoln Reading some of his speeches is a fairly spiritual experience
None after him (as president) could put together words like that. If he didn't write them, then replace Lincoln with whoever did. Not saying I agree with every word, just that the content, eloquence, and depth blow me away.

I think Paul Newman falls into that category rather well, actor, philanthropist, race car driver, humanitarian... seems like a pretty obvious mans man

If you're talking about someone who has brought joy, happiness and a feeling of well-being ( even if just for a few moments) I would have throw in BOB HOPE. He put himself in harms way to bring hope, momentary escape from what was going on around them, and American Pride to countless American Servicemen & Women over decades, along with the rest of his USO Troups. A man to respect? Bob Hope.
I'm speeding because I have to get there before I forget where I was going.

I would suggest Lt Col Paddy Mayne. The guy was a seriously talented amateur boxer. The guy played rugby for Ireland and the British Lions. He was one of the founding members of the Special Air Service. He pioneered driving up and down heavily defended enemy airstrips in a jeep and shooting up planes. Went into occupied France to work with and train the French Resistance. Was awarded 4 Distinguished Service Orders (DSO), one of those should have been a Victoria Cross (VC). Not forgetting all the awards that France bestowed upon him. Ended up doing polar exploration in Antartica after the war. Died in a car crash in 1955. Not a bad list of achievements for someone who died when he was only 40. I'd say that's a man's man. You never know they might be able to find an actor worthy enough to play the guy if they made a film about him. But I still think Homer Simpson is the "ubermale".

Oh are we going to have a thread on "a woman's woman?" It's just I've seen a few "woman's woman" films in my time and I might not gripe as much about actresses (I dunno if they had to read a script though).
