I saw a Harley with handicapped plates today. Didn't see the owner. Not sure what to make of it. I do find that handicapped spaces are pretty abused.

I'm all for handicapped spaces and people using them. It irritates the hell out of me when I see a perfectly healthy 30-year-old hang that decal from the mirror and run into a store. That's why I kill them.

I learned the easy way not to judge even that healthy looking 30 year old. A fried of our has MS. Most days shes fine but there are some she is not. She will get out of her car and look fine to everyone else (pride) but she can be in agony inside.

What pisses me off is when they have that placard and there are open spaces and they park in a close space that is NOT handicapped.

He was obviously handicapped because he was on a Harley.

I have mobility problems. Every time I go to the library, I have to wait until security finally decide press the button that opens the disabled access door. (I glare at them until they do.) Each time, I've got to tell them that I'm not strong enough to push the revolving doors.

Annoys the f*** outta me.

I have gained a greater appreciation for handicap access. The first few months after the mishap, simple things like a sidewalk curb were an obstacle. I still avoid steps that don't have handrails. Pride aside, I never turn down a pretty girl holding a door

+1 especially with Wendy being handicapped. I also get angry at the kids riding the handicapped scooters provided by the store or the fat people who are only on it because they are fat and lazy.

I knew a guy with a Harley who lost his leg because of diabetes but he still rode with his prosthetic leg. You never know.

I have a buddy that is missing a leg from a crash. He is quite passionate about people who are not handicapped parking in the handicapped spaces. If he sees a violation of this (and I have seen him do this) he will call the police tip line and then go and clip off all four valve stems so they cannot leave. He carries a pair of diagonal cutters (dykes) with him at all times for this purpose. He usually leaves before the police arrive. He has gotten into it with several of the people whose cars he is making a statement on, but even with one fake leg he is pretty willing and able to kick some a**.

I was a paramedic in my younger days. When we would get a call to a business with a fire lane, such as a large grocery store or big box, inevitably there would be cars parked in the fire lane for their convenience. I would ALWAYS position the ambulance in a way to keep them blocked in until we were ready to go if it was at all possible. If anyone protested in any way I picked up my walkie-talkie and had a police cruiser drop by to have a chat. If it was a non life threatening call and we weren't on the hook for another call I took my sweet time finishing up just to watch the miscreants squirm.
The things people will do to keep from walking an extra 30 feet astounds me.

I have a friend who has an after market leg too due to an accident and he rides a VW trike but he doesn't use handicapped parking, he says it's for people who need it. He does have a handicapped placard for bad days or when he gets a new leg and is sore.

I used to be amazed at the number of people who would park illegally to avoid a few foot walk to exercise at a "fitness" center.

There was a wateringhole in Hollywood that was a favorite biker hangout. One of the regulars bought a used van with a handicap sticker in the windshield. (that was before CA changed from stickers to placards) He was sitting on the fender talking to friends when officer Kilby (a real butthole who hated 'motorcyclists') walked up and wrote him a ticket for an illegal handicap sticker. While he was writing it, Old Man Bill was undoing the straps on his leg. When Kilby asked him to sign the ticket, he handed him his leg and asked him to hold it while he signed.

I'll do that to save the spaces for those who may be in even more need - especially if there are only a couple HC spaces available. What's the difference? If I didn't have the tag, I'd park there anyway.

But I've got to admit, I do question some of those who hang the placard, then hop out of their car and sprint into the store...

That this is even an issue says a lot about people's ethics and concern for others these days. I usually park far out, as I can certainly use the exercise. My Gma and Gpa didn't have a handicap sticker but they still needed to park close to the door. One time some jerk on a scooter rode it across the street from the dealership to the store and parked in the handicap area used to get a wheelchair out of a van. I left him a nasty note and let the dealership know that was BS. They were embarassed to say the least.

Well. I am indeed officially handicapped. Although I continue to progress on my journey to become a sunup to sundown prosthetic leg user .....I have periods when It hurts and I stay out of the leg.... I therefore use handicap spots in those instances. On at least one occasion I have caught lesser human beings using these spots who were otherwise perfectly healthy and did read those scum the riot act in public in front of their contemporaries in such a way that they will long remember the incident. I am rather good in the use of colorful language when pressed.

I have a permanent plate for use AS needed. If my leg is on I never use the spot. It is simply a matter of common decency. Leave the handicapped spots for those who have need of them.

As an aside if you have never had your butt chewed by a one legged man using a walker Marine Corps style at one foot distance @ 90DB volume in public ..well you have not lived.

i have people in my family that trully need those spaces and am very glad they are there (someday i will probably need them) but what bothers me most is places like wal-mart that have what seems like 1000 spots out the front door and there never seems to be more than a dozen or so that are being used at most at any one time. why do they feel the need to have so many?? are they expecting a rush of hc people showing up?? the wal-mart closest to my house is funny in that all those spots that take up pretty much the whole front of the store and the spot in the sidewalk designed for wheel chairs is all the way to one end of the store and no safe spot for my bike?? i have to park around the corner from the front and in a spot for cars and just last wk there was an incident where a friend of mines bike was parked in one of those spots where i usually park, had his bike run into by somebody that pulled into the spot, didnt see the bike and ran into it. 1000 spots for hc and not one safe spot for my bike??? i dont do alot of shopping at wal-mart as there is a k-mart closer but when k-mart aint got it i gotta go to wal-mart

I'm on 60% disability from the Air Force.(back probs) I could get a handicapped
plate if I wanted it but I stubbornly refuse.
Most days I'm fine, but 2-3 days a year I have to pull the
stick out from under my bed and strap it to the bike.
Eventually I guess I'll get one, but only when I really need it.

It's the law. The number of handicapped parking spots is based on the total capacity of the lot.

There was once a Golden Corral on the corner by where I work that had a semi protected motorcycle parking area. Unfortunately, it was sold and is now a Chinese place.

Dosen't much matter to me about who steps out of/off a vehicle that displays a handicap permit. Firstly, ever try to deal with the driver's license office? Well these folks with the placard had to...many times I recon. Secondly, we are not the judge of what constitutes a handicap. Got a problem with the card placard holder's apparent lack of need for same? Take it up with the magistrate or whoever issued the placard. Some real enlightenment there if ya care to pursue it. Lastly, as a common courtesy the nearest parking places to a business should be, by default/common sense, reserved for those folks that have a hard time with distances. Yet the general populace is really not that forward thinking in this the me manner of life we find ourselves living in. Courtesy is shot to hell anymore.

I love my BA and I really like my pristine 15 year old BMW as well as my truck. Consequently, I never park anywhere near the crowded area of ANY parking lot unless the weather is horrific and I am not dressed for it. I prefer to have multiple open spaces on either side of me and for my bike to be visible from all directions. Even the biggest parking lots only add another minute to my arrival time. Count me among those that have met the requirements for a tag on occasion but I'll leave them to those that truly need them.

It's pretty easy to judge. My ex-girlfriend had chronic (not acute) leukemia (CML) and was in pain most of the time. Walking any kind of significant distance kicked her ass. To all of you it would just look like she was fat and lazy. She was constantly puffed up from the chemo and walked like the kid from A Christmas Story, but without the multiple layers of winter clothes. On the rare day she felt somewhat normal, we wouldn't use the HC hanger. Those days were rare.

So STFU if you don't know what's going on with a particular person. I know people are jackwagons and sometimes it's obvious they're faking, but it ain't always the case. And if you don't know, you don't know, so butt out.

(I loved being able to park up front but I know to everyone else--and I saw the stares, believe me--it looked like a couple of fatties abusing the system. F them.)

The assbugger whose butt I chewed in public at close range at 90 DB volume lierally jogged from his "handicapped" spot towards the store.

He , if anything, will not forget that verbal assualt I layed on him.

He was stuck between a rock and a very hard place. There I was standing in front of him questioning his ancestry in colorful terms while holding on to my walker with one leg on the ground and the residual limb hanging. He would have looked really bad if he had chosen to get physical. (I knew he would not)

I have a plate but I will only use it when its needed and on no other circumstance.

And you can bet if I catch another bonehead parking in a handicapped spot and jogging towards the store ...well he'd best not be withing relative ear shot of me because he will not forget the result.....especially if all the spots are taken and I am without my leg.

BTY ...I agree being fat is not a handicap for most people who consider themselves obese. Unless you are 4 foot nothing and weigh in @ 300 pounds...now that is handicapped.

I think most of us can tell a faker from the real thing. The point is that the spots are supposed to be used by people with a REAL handicap ...

Heck I will rip any able bodied looking bugger a new arse if they steal MY handicap spot in prime time and make me walk .......I dont give sour owl poop who they are. If they dont hang a tag or have a plate its open season.
And if they do and they seem fully healthy I will assume they are taking advantage of the deal.

Any of you able bodied pukes who think otherwise come and try me......he he. Its easy to talk smack when YOU have both legs. Take if from those of us who are REALLY handicapped.

I'm sure you were sure, and it sounds like a clear cut case. And he deserved it. Just saying there are plenty of people who don't look handicapped but are (4' and 300lbs.? did you date my ex-girlfriend too? ).

Do that quite often myself.
As for the large # of HC spots, it has to do with local ordinances requiring so many based on total # of parking spots i'd imagine.

Before my mom passed away we got her a tag. She had just gotten her 2nd heart valve. She looked great for the first few hundred feet then got winded.

If somebody had jumped all over her, they would think long and hard about it all through their facial reconstruction.

Though the tag hangs from my mirror at all times, we only use it on my wife's "bad days". People confuse us because I occasionally have a limp (plantar fascitis), but my wife has the real unseen medical problems.
