Found a small puddle of oil underneath my bike yesterday. I could see where it was dripping from the oil filter. So it was tightened. Well this morning the filter was clean but there was another puddle of oil.

Pull off the filter and check the gasket. While it's off, check the filter for damage, they are vulnerable where they are located. If the gasket wasn't lubricated at installation or if the filter was overtightened, the gasket can be twisted or wrinkled, causing a leak.

Check the oil cooler line banjo bolt fittings. If the lower cooler fitting is leaking, then the oil will follow the lines down & appear like the leak is in the area of the drain plug. Easy fix, but you'll need a stubby 24mm or 15/16ths wrench to snug it up.

If it's an aftermarket filter with the 'nut' welded on the end for tightening, check that it's not leaking where the 'nut'welds to the filter body. There has been some discussion about that here.

I had a K&N made with that 'nut.' Last year it delaminated spewing oil all over the back of the bike. I was lucky she didn't run dry!! Something to watch out for, that's for sure.

Some of the hoses that end under the frame have been known
to ooze out and drip an oil-like goo. I think there's three
of them hoses: carb overflow, tank vent, and airbox drain.
I'm sure I'll be corrected if my memory fails me again.
Maybe put newspaper under the bike to try to pinpoint the
leak? Just thinkin' out loud,
Uncle Charlie

I've never heard of this problem before. And I have the K&N filter installed and a spare in my bag. I'll have to keep a closer eye on this now. Thanks!

That K&N nut seems like a good idea but isn't. I had one that I hit putting the bike on the lift. It didn't leak until I fired the bike up,it pissed oil all over my driveway. Glad I noticed before I took off to work.

Discovering the puddle of oil after tightening the filter, I thought it could be coming from the cam cover. I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't think of the oil plug. Took out the handy socket set and turn the plug about half a turn- Solved!
