Hi Folks. Changing exhaust on EFI bikes requires remapping of the ECU to adjust the fuel map. This is known as a 'tune'.

My 2010 Speedmaster came with a 20183 tune. This is the stock tune for a Speedmaster/America with with mechanical speedometer. The LCD/Electronic speedometer models have different tunes.

For modded or aftermarket pipes my 2010 requires the 20184 tune. This will richen the mixture a bit to compensate for the loss in backpressure and reduce popping.

I used TuneECU to do this work here

To read the existing fuel map here

First, you must read the map which can take about 20 minutes. The engine is off, but the ignition is on. There is NO separate fuse for the headlight on the Speedmaster, so it is imperative to have a fully charged battery and it have it plugged into a charger or disconnect the headlight bulb.

Once the map has been read in, you can save it to your computer.

The next step is DOWNLOAD a tune into the ECU. This goes much quicker than the read. It takes just a few seconds to to this.

Once this is done, the throttle position sensor (TPS) needs to be reset. This is done with TuneECU running. The bike is started and idled for a few minutes to do this.

ECU Reset TPS is selected in TuneECU, and then the engine is started. Let the engine idle until the “TPS” status indicator (in the status bar) changes to green (after 10 to 15 minutes). No throttle input must be used during this process!

Tunes are available here

To do this job you need a notebook or netbook computer running Windows XP or better. I use a small netbook.

For data cable and system requirment specs here

TuneECU has been developed privately, and is available at no charge by the developer. I believe that you can donate to the cause if you wish on his website.

I hope this note points those with EFI bikes in the right direction.

H.

Good write up Hyates. I use Tuneboy so can't comment on TuneECU but it looks to do most of what Tuneboy does and it's FREE!

Thanks, Man. I've been pretty impressed with TuneECU. Besides, those with EFI machines will need to get familiar with some of this stuff, so I figured I'd get some things going over here.

Yeah we need the info available - because to many of us EFI is a bit of a mystery - the whole "How do you tune an engine with a computer?" gets a bit daunting. I was like that but took the plunge and found it pretty easy and VERY satisfying results - EFI is infinitely superior to carbs for tuning control and tuning permanence. But I did struggle in finding the info to educate myself - there's a fair bit over in RAT-land and here and also from technical manuals and books. What you're doing with these threads is making that info far more accessible - and less daunting. Especially now that TuneECU is available for our bikes.

I have the TuneECU program, cable and the 20184 map. My question is where is the ECU plug located on an 09 Speedy. I am ready to do the remap but have been holding back do to the weather (unheated garage) and not knowing the plug location. Also, can the latest TuneECU program be loaded over an older one or should the older be deleted first?

Thanks

Frank

So when you do these write ups about EFI bikes let me know. I made your very own Tech Vault thread. I have three of your posts so far.

The ECU plug is under your seat fitted face down on a holder that's part of the airbox intake. I have Tuneboy so I don't know the proceedure with TuneECU. I recommend you carefully reread Hyates posts and the TuneECU instructions - and then read them again

Thank you, Richard. I have been reading and rereading intensely! I am ready to go and hunt up the plug.Hopefully this will go well.

Thanks again,

Frank

Hey Frank. Yes, you can overwrite the EXE and DLL file of TuneECU. Always use the most current version of TuneECU, and make sure that you use the correct tune for your bike.

I highly recommend reading the instructions very carefully and understand what you are about to do.

Put the TuneECU application in C:\TuneECU. Put the fuel maps in C:\Maps. There is a warning on TuneECUs site saying not to bury the maps too deep in directory structures.

There is enough slack in the OBDC plug/cable to reroute it behind the RH side cover. You could ziptie it in place there and it would be really easy to connect up without removing the seat(s).

Thanks H. That is exactly what I wanted to know. Wasn't sure if I could overwrite or not. This makes life a little easier. Have the correct tunes for the bike and the exhaust(modded stock). The reading recommendation is good and I have been doing just that. Not wanting to make a relatively easy job difficult because of a dumb mistake.

Thanks again,

Frank
