I wonder if he has given up the pig bikes for a real ride? That should be mandatory in his contract. Of course, if he rides a Triumph and chooses to keep his Harley he isn't up to the job anyway.

Well Jason, I'm not so sure one could say H-D's "Trade-Up" program was the driving force behind them selling so well. I'd venture to say that that program probably only marginally contributed to their overall sales. I think their impressive sales figures over these past few decades could probably be attributed to the fact that once they introduced the much more reliable Evo powered motorcycle in 1984, American motorcycle buyers started taking them seriously as an alternative to offshore brands. And then throw in the "Patriotic Factor" of them being built in the good ol' U.S. of A., the booming economy during this time frame, and then of course the whole "Instant Bad Boy Image" crap that comes with the purchase of each and every Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and VOILA...you've got yourself one hell of a marketing strategy that you can hang your doo-rag on, already!!!!! (...I mean what does Triumph really have, huh?!...that they're well-engineered motorcycles and a good value?...now THAT'S a tough sell to the public, ya know!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Dwight YES but Harley Marketing is kinda working Right?? We see HARLEY this and that everywhere.. Do the forks at Triumph wish to have that??? I think so And my point of the "trade-UP!" Is that not one of the tricks Harley USED?? If you get Joe blow public to buy They will like a Triumph (most of us Know THAT) then you full their heads with oh your bike is "entry-level" here you can move up some are going too.. AND IF sales keep getting better Triumph will come up with New and diffrent bikes and will try to give the buyers what they WANT!! (sorry is that Blue Book value?? or best bang for the buck value??) I would like to SEE Triumph DO the Harley Marketing I think that a great thing for ALL of us!!

Once again, I don't think the "Trade-Up" thing will ever work to get Triumph sales figures anywhere near the level of H-D sales.
I my view if Triumph wants to increase sales it needs(and had needed since its return to our shores) to hit the Mass Market Media with a few well placed ads in order to get the word out that..."YEAH!!! TRIUMPH, ANOTHER HERITAGE MOTORCYCLE BRAND, IS STILL MAKIN' MOTORCYCLES!!!"
I mean, come on, HOW MANY TIMES have we ALL had somebody walk up to us and be surprised to see our bike and learn this "little bit" of news...OR...have somebody join our little circle of friends around here and right off the get-go tell us that their discovery of their recent purchase was my sheer LUCK, 'cause they didn't know the Triumph brand or maybe this particular model lineup existed, either??? All they hear EVERYWHERE is "Harley-Davidson", "Harley-Davidson", "Harley-Davidson"!
And, Triumph needs to push the above mentioned idea that Triumph's "heritage" is as long and as vaulted as Harley-Davidson's, because THIS is also one of the concepts that sells motorcycles to the American Public! They like the idea that the motorcycle they're riding has(in the parlance of kid's today) "Street Cred"!!!

Maybe get the likes of Kid Rock to do an Ad. 50Cent too Lil Wayne maybe could have a few in his videos...Movies we need more Triumphs in Movies!! Would be great !!! Splatter the malls with Triumph Tshirts and Hats ...MARKETING yea get the TRUIMPH name seen everywhere!!

Yep! But, I hope you realize that right now a few of our membership who are reading this are thinking(and almost assuredly will post) that they're "glad Triumph doesn't sell anywhere near the levels of H-D, 'cause they like the idea that they're riding a brand of motorcycle that not very swingin' dick out there is riding!" (...or words to that effect...they might not use the words "swingin' dick", you see!!!)

The only way Triumph's sales will eclipse Harley's will be if HD goes out of business. Deal with it. I think it's great. I don't want to see that many Triumphs on the road. I want the company to be healthy but I don't want them to be as common as HD.

Nothing to it. It's just a matter of scale and image. In America Triumph is a niche brand. HD goes hand in hand with America, Mom and Apple Pie. Their marketing strategies are brilliant. The only thing that they did was screw themselves by overselling the market, especially starting around the time of the 100th anniversary in 2003. In recent years they've been scrambling to open up other markets, both foreign and domestic (minorites, for example). The trade up program was aimed at twenty-somethings that couldn't afford a full size bike. It's all brilliant. All they can do is overdo it and ruin themselves. No one is taking them down anytime soon.
But who cares? As long as Triumph is healthy I'm happy.

Btw John, I'm soooooo glad to see you have much more class than I do, and didn't resort to usin' that timeworn and oh so guttural expression "swingin' dick" in your response! (...but then again, this would be one of the reasons you're in charge around here and not me, huh???!!!)

Being that we are back on this. I agree Triumph will never see the day they out sell Harley in America. However much like the image that Harley has of being a tough guy bike. Triumph has an image of ultra cool and nostalgia to play on. That has some great marketing ideas built right in. Although I don't want us to become cliche. I would like to see less ugly jap bikes on the road. Sorry most of them are just grotesque plastic harley knock offs.

Wonder how long it will be before we start seeing Triumph t-shirt shops pop up all over the place.
Well I had to come to England to get a decent Triumph t-shirt. Bought one of the dealer shirts and also a Steve McQueen special edition. Don't see many in the states. At least not my part of the states. Becky

Well Becky, I suppose you could blame some o' that on me!
You see, as much as I've tried over the years, I STILL haven't had any luck gettin' that darn hard-headed owner of a Victory dealership in Prescott Valley to pick up the Triumph franchise!!!
(...sure would be nice to once again have a Triumph dealership up this way, wouldn't it?)

Most of the T's I have seen in the dealerships around here aren't as cool as what she is describing anyway. Most of what I have see here is kind of lame

I'm ALREADY concerned with ALL the Triumphs we're seein' in THBC and on The Chopper Underground website.
I liked it MUCH better when I was the ONLY ONE on a Triumph cruiser at the places I went.
