Last week, while stopped for gas in PA, I'm beside a beat-up Civic that has an intercooler peeking out of the front bumper. I start talking to the 20 year old owner who pops the hood and shows me a 365 horsepower, 18 psi turbo'd motor that he build and installed. The car has a first class adjustable suspension and some good tires/wheels. He says he surprises a lot of Vettes, new Hemi's, etc and can out run and out handle them. I believe him and you can see the pride on his face describing what he built. The kids hands are greasy black......There's some hope!

I think that the face of our industry is changing. My friend Chuck races an old Mopar at New England dragway in NH. He was telling me about tuning in the pits next to a kid in his 20's. Chuck had a timing light and the kid had a laptop, Chuck looked over and gave the kid the thumbs-up. There is a universal love afair with things mechanical which is inheirent, (remember when your parents bought you a bicycle and you took it apart before you rode it). It also crosses cultural boundaries. I always make sure I check out the awesome work the Hispanic kids are doing on their low riders and pick their brains on hydraulics. The kids doing it today are underground and listening to old farts sayin' what's the matter with these kids today just like us and our dads. Maybe nothing's changed after all.

If he's got about 200 bikes, I guess I'm about 4% of the next him! (but if I'm OLDER than him, does that make HIM the next ME, x 25 ? The one thing we BOTH have in common? we BOTH have NO MONEY!
And you may see me tonight

A great short film. I share some similar thoughts to this guy about future generations having the skills and aptitudes to carry on with the restoration and preservation of the current and classic machinery we own, ride and maintain.

Yep, if you enjoyed the video, you'll like the book. I just tried to read "Zen & the Art..." again, but that's a no go for me. Too boring! Quote:
RE: the video...
I know it's been mentioned here before, but the book "Shop class as soulcraft" is a great book in a similar vein.

I picked up Zen on Audible.com for my next long trip. Read it about 25 years ago.
