Hello all. What is the difference between the two different Triumph logos? The tail from the "R" often goes straight through the "H", but sometimes it whips around the "H". Thanks,

Dan

Funny you should ask, Dan!

There just happens to be a gentleman who frequents this website and who has done some exhausting research about this very subject....

Great minds think alike. Thanks for the info. At first I thought that shirts printed with the tail of the "R" whipped around the "H" were knockoffs. It's good to know I'm not being cheated. ha! Ride Safe!

Nope! As you've found out here, you weren't being cheated at all. In fact, I'd venture to say that most of us old enough to have maybe purchased a brand new Triumph motorcycle that was assembled at the old Meriden factory, probably prefer the look of the 1936-1985 logo over the newer ones.

(...and those who might prefer the even older logos that were affixed upon their brand new bikes which were assembled at the even older Coventry factory that was destroyed during The Blitz, probably aren't ridin' motorcycles much anymore...that is if they're even still with us at all anymore!)

Sometime I've got to get that page and a couple other pages moved over to TriumphConnection.com

I thought maybe the prevalence of the older logo on 'unofficial' merchandise was because the logo was public domain (older than 50 years) or maybe Triumph just let the old logo copyright lapse -- because you rarely see the new logo unofficially. Perhaps they police that better.

Cheers, Richard

The older classic logo is not public domain. Triumph still owns it. But, they don’t crack down on it's use as much. there are a couple major retail brands (like Lucky Brand Jeans) that have a licensed with Triumph to resell items with the old classic logo.

I'd think being a "Geezer, I used to have one of those back in the 60's" site, the collective preference would be this one

I wish I could find a color version of it and the 1902-1906 Shield (but I think that was before they invented color).

This is the logo on the tank of the Riccy at Barber:
