Cars are transportation ....Bikes(motorcycles), small airplanes and horses are .... I think maybe that is because they can all bite you if you are not paying attention !

Ya know Daniel... if I hadn't read your bio, I'd have to think your statement there was inspired by substance abuse!

They bite more easily. Cars will friggin kill you just as dead. Getting t-boned by a Mac truck will perish you regardless of your method of conveyance.

I don't even know if it's more easily. Cages lull you into a sense of false security, with the others your senses are heightened. Probably why we do it

Well, that is true...a Mack will do a job on you....but riding into to work this morning...feeling a subtle nip of the morning chill....I started looking at the loons in their cages....(a loon looking at loons)and thinking of my personal , desired means of transport and why I gravitate to them..... on the Bike, Plane and Horsey... there is a hightened sense of vulnerability.... my wife has made a comment...she likes her "buble" cup holder and climate control....riding along I started to not their simularities... they all bite and you are more exposed ... more of a morning muse.

A "heightened sense of vulnerability" is most certainly NOT why I ride. Maybe heightened senses in general, the speed, the control, the perceived freedom. But vulnerability? Screw that. I like being safe. It might be why YOU ride, but there's no need to generalize. I try to mitigate the risks involved as much as I can. I'm not an adrenaline junkie. And I don't give a crap if anyone thinks it's cool or not. I was going to buy a BMW before I found my TBA. I'm glad I did because there are few things less cool than a BMW. Unless you're a BMW fan.

I actually feel safer on my bike because the awareness of what's going on around me is much more acute than it is when I'm in my truck.
And that's probably because I AM more vulnerable and thus want to protect my ass as well as I can.

Awareness is a whole other issue. I've always driven little cars (old VWs) and have always been extra paranoid about getting run over. My head was always on a swivel anyway. That translated well to motorcycle riding.

maybe, but i was glad my family was in a minivan when they got t-boned by a moving truck running a red. The Van had the passenger side pushed in a good two feet and they had to be cut out with saws but no one was badly hurt.
I nearly wept when I saw the van at the wreckers and we kept buying mini-vans til the girls were grown.

Bikes, boats, aircraft and horses all bank the right way when they turn.

If ya really want to know why. Here ya go.
I have no faith in human perfectability. I think that human exertion will have no appreciable effect upon humanity. Man is now only more active - not more happy - nor more wise, than he was 6000 years ago.
