I stumbled across this bike on craigslist a year and half ago. I tore it down to the bare frame and spent the last year rebuilding the motor and incorporating some newer elements like three phase alternator, modern regulator/rectifier and electronic ignition...and yesterday it ran for the first time. I still have some work to do but the major portion of the rebuild is finished and I hope to soon have a reliable daily runner to compete with my America.

That is such a beautiful bike you fixed up there, Ed. I think it belongs in the "Member's Rides" section for safe keeping!!

Sweet bike Ed, to me there would be no contest, the old Trophy would be my choice of rides.

And, you have a good stopper up front on that beauty there too, Ed. Those late '60s TLS brakes really are quite the improvement over the stock SLSs of that era, aren't they?!
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Not quite on the road yet...maybe I could borrow one of your yutes to kick while I set the timing and get that first heat cycle run in. Kick starting has an undeserved romance and just about whipped my butt when she fired for the first time. Then I have to chase down a tag and some insurance; you can bet that when those first days are warm enough I'll be ready :-)

I'll send one of the boys your way. They are strong as an ox and could kick her over all day. The problem you would have is feeding him. They eat everything not moving and some slow moving animals.

If you have everything adjusted right that thing should start with 1 kick and with maybe 3 dead cold.

Beautiful! Reminds me of my very nice 1968 Bonnie, which I had to sell. Great job there, and I hope you enjoy your classic as long as I did mine! (15 years)

It's very hard to kick over with the plugs in so I'm thinking I missed something important.

A friend of mine used to show how well I tuned mine by starting it with his hand instead of foot. He was a little bigger than me though.

That's why I'm going back in when I get back from this weeks road trip, I know it's not right and I'll just have to start over. At least the rest of the bike is in good order so it's only the engine...it's not a tuning problem, it's something mechanical out of order.

I didn't find much. The cylinders and piston look clean and shiny, no seizure. The con-rods seem slack side to side but are tight vertically, still that's worrisome because I don't remember them being slack at all. The oil lines were hooked up properly so that's not it, either. Since there's an long established Brit bike shop over in Atlanta I'm shipping the bottom end to them to have it redone while I'm at work; he'll let me know what went wrong and I'll get it back before my riding opportunities vanish.

The cases are split in Atlanta and it seems I put the roller bearing in incorrectly; when I installed the race I apparently reversed the bearing, inside to outside. That explains why it was so difficult to slip the crank back into place. More news as the details emerge...

Two months later the bike is back together and I managed to get in a couple of laps around the yard. If all goes well tomorrow it'll have insurance and a tag and I'll be doing a lap around the Little River Canyon <:-)
Still doesn't kick easily but that could just as easily be my 59 year old kicking leg. That said, third kick was magic most of the time. I'm surprised at how powerful it feels for single carb 650...but, then again, this used to be a big motor bike back in the day.

Well done! That is what a motorcycle is supposed to look like.

You should be real proud of yourself Ed. Well done for restoring another older legend that can live for generations to come, touch wood. Show the youngsters what the "big" 650's in their day were like and also remind the Older ones like us too.

If it kicks easier with the switch off, retard the timing a few degrees.

Nice job Ed. What carb are you running? Doesn't look like the original Amal?

The bike came to me with an aftermarket MAP intake and 32mm round slide Mikuni; I think this is maybe the easiest carb ever to clean and set up.

Nope, it kicks easier without the plugs in. I think my complaint is with the compression ratio but I'm willing to do a bit of jumping to run it in before I explore alternate pistons. Who knows, it's been 30 years since I had a kickstart bike...the romance and faded memory of youth might be clouding my judgement as to what a hard kick is.
