Hi Derek,

Some of us have already booked in at the Mount View Motel.

If you can make it you would be quite welcome. The more the merrier.

I rode down from townsville via the New England. Did Tvl to Mackay in some of the worst weather I have ever been in. (Worse than the water filled goggles ride) Did Mackay to Bris Vegas in one day then via Warick, Tenterfield Camped in a park at Willow Tree then Newcastle via the vineyards. Inland is a better route but to get to Buledelah you could slip down Thunderbolts Way. Don't know about it in the winter though.

Our intention is to travel inland and then on the Thunderbolt Way.

If the weather doesn't look to good we will stick to the coast.

Got stuck in snow at Glen Innes in July many years ago.

That's a real shame Choco. It sounds like you a pretty disappointed about it too.

Umm, re your question about future OzBams. We'll have to see what everyone thinks after this one. I can't see why we won't have a great time if our meet with the six Amigos was anything to go by.

Everyone's nice and relaxed. Don't mind a beer and the social side with chatting about this and that. All like minded people in other words who just love their bikes. Hey, I can even talk about Ferdie and not look at my missus with a blank face. Don't get me wrong about my missus, she's the best but just not interested in bikes. Never minds me going though

So anyway, we'll wait and see what others think but I wouldn't mind an annual or once every two year OzBam meet. As far as different venues, It would be great to share round the states. Gives us all a reason to travel to Vic or Qld or whatever.

One step at a time though mate.

cheers

Me again,

One of our Northern OzBam-sters asked me this question given I live in Cold Canberra and am always riding up to Warm QLd.

Anyway, I'm going to make a cuppa tea first and then I'll reply. If anyone wants to bust in and make their own comments in the meantime, then by all means go for it. I'll be Baaaaack

How do you deal with the cold - screen? heated clothing, heated gloves, multiple layers? You will have noticed I am trying to work out a solution for the August run. I know it will probably be warm enough during the day without heated gear but early mornings or afternoons could get cold in the mountains

Back again. As I was saying, I have never found riding in the cold a problem except once. I'll explain that in a minute.

As far as cold (and wet) weather goes, for me one of the main reasons I have a screen

is for protection. I agree Ferdie would probably look better without one but the way I look at riding is practicality first, then looks if possible.

Not always easy to do but I know everyone's different and some don't like them at all but like Jimmy crack corn, I just couldn't give two fat rats, or is that "I don't care"

Anyway, in Winter the wind protection is superb. It doesn't mean I'm in some vacuum like some other IMHO, "ugly looking bikes", but it's the next best thing.

You'll notice I also have lowers. Again, initially I thought they would look terrible cos I've seen some bikes that look like a travelling screen, but I don't mind the look of Ferdie at all.

So the reason for the lowers is, I found when I put the Memphis Shades Big Shot on it just seem to divert more wind up from below. Sort of like inverse pressure or something. So with the lowers, like I said I have it pretty well sussed.

Now clothing. In a simplistic explanation, it's all about layers. Layers to put on and take off as I ride north or south and it gets warmer or colder.

So my main protection in winter clothes wise is, a quality full length wet weather coat such as Dry Rider or in my case "Rivet". I have had mine now for 5 years and it's brilliant cos it has a zip in or out warm layer I have in for down south but I can easily remove it and then unzip up these ventilation pockets for some flow through breeze.

Also on the must have list (for me this is) is a pr of Rivet wet weather pants. So between these two I am very well protected from the elements.

Now for the real cold riding such as when leaving Canberra, I also woolen thermals underwear, and in my case "Draggin Jeans". Then there's waterproof boots which are very important, the layers for up top to put on or take off as required, and besides a full face helmet (I have the shoei Multitek which opens up to look like an open face), a pair of quality, expensive warm, waterproof gloves.

So that's about it really.

People at my work talk about riding in the cold and rain and how do I do it, blah blah blah. It's all about having the right gear. If you do, I actually find it different and exciting in it's own way.

I guess the only areas I'm currently not happy with is my boots and my gloves.

The reason is, the good one's I've found cost a lot of money and I don't want to go through what I went through last winter. Namely whilst on my last leg moving into the Canberra region, I came across some freezing rain. The gloves I had I though would be ok but after becoming soaked through, and with the cold I had to stop and try to warm them up using Ferdie's engine cos I couldn't feel them anymore. Very painful too.

So, either quality water proof gloves or if they sell them, some water proof over gloves to keep to gloves dry. I haven't had a look yet but before my next ride through winter, that will be sorted.

So, for anyone travelling down from Queensland and particularly if via Stanthorpe, make sure you have some quality gear cos without it, riding is NOT fun.

As far as riding round Bulahdelah, it's not really cold there at all. In fact, the whole way along the coast is mainly pretty mild compared to inland and further south. I suppose only the early mornings are coolish but that's only brief.

Hope this has been of help to anyone interested and the Bamster who asked and who's name shall remain ononymous. Unless of course he or she would like to reply

cheers all

Thanks Stacka yes mate I am disapponited, because as I said before this sounds like it's going to be a great ride, but I am one of those poor souls who work's and live from payday to payday and the wife finds it hard to get work because she has a few health issues thats no fault of her own, so sometimes finding that extra play money is hard.

Sorry I had to ask that maybe OzBam could become a annual event and yet you are still to hold the first one, but going by the replies I read here there seems to be a real excitement from the members that want to attend this year and if you all have a great time which I feel you will, then just maybe it will happen next year and maybe a charge of State would be interesting, so safe ride to all going this year and I hope you all have a great time cheers.

Choco, we'll definitely be keeping people like yourself in our thoughts if or most likely when we decide to hold another one.

Obviously our main reason for holding our first one at Bulahdelah was due to the fact it is sort of in the middle of the main ares where members could have the best possibility of making it over a weekend or for the Qld'ers a long weekend.

Maybe if there's a next time it could be closer to Qld so they only need to have a weekend off.
I'm just throwing ides out there and everything we decide has to be discussed with the majority and confirmed by our default committee who just happened to be those who brought up the idea in the first place. It's just a structure thing that every group needs that's all.

Stacka.

Thanks Stacka, all good mate I am sure many of us out there today are finding it hard to make a dollar but as long as I have got good members like yourself and others to chat to on this forum I never feel left out even if I can't make the rides cheers.

After 25 years in the tropics any temp below 25 is cold to me. I intend to look at the traders stalls at the Ulysses meet to update my cold weather gear. Already have my woolly undies. Found my wax cotton pants in a box the other day. Had them in the 80s in Adelaide. Still in perfect condition so all I really need is a decent set of gloves. I have over mittens that deal with Tropical monssons well. Been toying with the idea of a screeen or going back to a full face helmet. My dad used to ride to work at all hours all year and he swore by his screen. Might look at that.

A sheild is not practical with my set-up. Instead, I'm looking at the Powerlet range of heated gear - specifically the new heated vest and glove liners - they use a carbon fibre cloth that heats infrared (no wiring in the material). That way I won't have multi layers of bulky clothing - just a t-shirt, vest liner and leather jacket.

Cheers, Richard

YES! We think alike! But the A/C is 240v - could be a real problem. Then I thought - just get a very long power extension lead. Then I thought NAH! That would be irresponsible - global warming and all that.

I spotted your bike from about 200 metres away going down the Great Western Highway and immediately recognised it as an America.
My eyes can't be that bad.
I'm in Colyton, do you live local?
Imagine meeting up with a fellow BA.com member and not realising it eh?

No offence taken Richard.
Maybe I got a little excited seeing another TBA on the road. They're not that thick on the ground around my parts you know. I wonder if there is a typical looking Triumph BA/SM rider appearance-wise? I mean Buckers (Terry) even had a flip-up helmet just like mine.

Good to have met you John. I work at the TAFE at Mt Druitt but live in Springwood.

Ive booked in the Mount View on Sat night. What is the plan for Saturday? Are we going up to Nabiac? If so what time roughly? I was thinking coming up Sat, go to museum, come back to motel, few lemon sherbs and home Sunday morning. Gets me away and the missus happy.

Cheers

Hi Ken, I think the plan for Saturday was to go to the bike museum at Nabiac.

We can probably work out a time that suits everbody.

I am sure that it wont be to early a start as I can imagine that there will be a few hangovers on Saturday morning.

P.S. Stacka drinks VB.

How many are going you ask Frank?

Hi fellahs, I thought I'd have a quick look to see if anyone's forgotten about our OzBam ride yet and was glad there's a bit of bumping going on

To answer you question Frank, to be honest I'm not quite sure. I was thinking of going back through the this thread and counting the affirmatives there. Then having a look at the pm's and adding them, then seeing if there were any emails that didn't match and coming to a total that would probably be wrong anyway.

So my view is, let's see who makes it cos we'll be having a great time regardless.

As far as Nabiac is concerned, it would be good for a ride together to the museum, but I'm happy to go with the flow on that one. My main objective is to get a good ride up to Bullah, meet, share a few, drool over other bikes like mine but different and then ride up to Qld whichever way feels good at the time to see my beautiful daughter. Then it's ride home after a week off. So Nabiac or not, it'll be great regardless.
