Do coils get weak over time?

Should the ignition coils be replaced periodically? Do they degrade over time, or do they work ok up to a point of failure. My plugs are starting to foul, so I am going to replace the plugs and wires. Should I do the coils too? That's a big money jump for and unknown performance gain.

Thanks,
Cody

Officially no, really yes. Heat and exposure take their toll, and they're really just two coils of wire inside a bath of oil to keep them cool. However unless they take a knock etc they should be good for 10-15 years really.

Yes, they do deteriorate. But the rate varies so much from one to the next that you can't reliably predict a good time to replace them as preventive maintenance. Once in a while, shut off the gas and run the carb's empty one night when you are done riding. Pull the plugs next morning, lay them on the head with the wire attached and watch then while cranking the starter. If you get a nice fat blue spark on both plugs, the coils are probably doing well. Another check is to make sure the engine will still rev to the limit under load. If you get a puney yellowish spark or the engine starts cutting out early when loaded, it would be a good idea to get the coils tested on a proper testbench.

The reason for running the carbs empty and waiting 'til next morning is to avoid a funny surprize. If you have a combustible mixture going through the engine and your sparkplugs are sitting there sparking away, you could get a bit of a flamethrower effect.

Thanks guys. That is basically what I suspected. I think I'll just replace the plugs and wires right now, and check the coils when I start riding again in the spring. I might have to cut my jetting back a notch too. Thanks again.

When you do you might wanna think about the nology coils from Brent. Probably no more than triumph coils, and in fact knowing triumph's inflated parts prices they may well be cheaper.
