The sound of the SS-pipes are indeed beatiful, but when I am driving without the silencers I am waking up the Trolls in the mountains here in north of norway!!! Anyway, I want a 'middle-sound' and I am thinking about cutting the silencers down to half the size.

Good idea or just a forget about it???

by "silencer" and your description is it safe to assume you mean without the baffle (the thing that is inserted inside the pipe?

I did that once...rode with no baffle....much much too loud.
Try removing the material wrapped around the baffle. That may be what your looking for.
