Hello all, Just been searching through the forums and have found that everyone has opinions on "how good" their bike rides with their particular set-up.
I had 2 x questions just to generate some discussion and see if we could determine the best power from a Bonneville America/Speedmaster:
1. What set-up (pipe/carbs/jets/air filter/capacity) gives the best power output?
2. Does anyone have dyno results for their set-up?
Cheers, Ohh, to start the ball rolling I am at 60PS / 62Nm with Stock set-up until my D&D's / Freak turns up in the mail!
TBA, Stainless extractors / drag pipes, 65mm over forward controls, Thruxton needles, 904cc, head ported, lowered 1-inch, Console removed, relocated battery box, Australia.

Well Christopher, You're on your way lad. The D&Ds and freak will get you to near max. There are other mods you can make, but you should be in good shape when the postman delivers. My setup is 130 mains, modified stock airbox with UNI filter, drilled out stock pipes and Thunderbird Sport needles. My dyno resulted in 68hp at rear wheel, running rich through the mid range. But the shop is a Harley only custom shop and he only ran mine because it is a Triumph (and he told the usual story about how his next door neighbor's second cousin's nephew had a Triumph 150 years ago and would outrun anything in the territory). I said that because I think HD custom shops run dynos that add about 8% to the actual horsepower so the customers will think they have a powerful bike.
Ride Safe,
Dennis

Hey I got my set-up Freak/D&D/160/45/3.75turns/AI out installed, WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I have a hill near my place that was a 3rd gear struggle before, now it is 4th gear all the way no problems! And the bark from the D&D's is awsome! (just another satisfied reader of this forum, thanks everyone)
The only problem is a slight pop from the exhaust on decelleration, is this caused by the mixture ajustment (3.75 out)or should I shim the needles?

Try opening your mixture screws a tad. Although I am a little surprised they are that far out with 45s. When you installed the pilots, did you start with say, two turns out or go right to 3.75?

What I am going to do is order the whole jetting kit with the new air filter. Once that is installed I will also take off the AI and set it all up and run the test again. The only problem here is getting the parts it takes time as usual.

Freak, 160s with one shim, stock pilots, JCWhitney pipes and I think I was 3.5 turns out. Mileage was under 1000 miles at the time and test was about 60 degrees F. Dyno was at the Triumph dealers. Best of 3 was just over 66 HP. Second run was a couple months later. Carbs adjusted to about 4 with Iridium plugs and I think the moon correctly alignment. Best of 3 69HP. I will try to post both results tonight in my pics. Scanning didn't work last time I tired so I will take a photo of them. I still owe everyone on here results of big bore and cam dyno but I'm having issues with carbs and have a couple of things to try to straighten them out before I bring the fast red speedmaster in for dyno results. New set up has Truxtons and I have a slight flat spot near top end.

I had the mixture screws at that setting because of what other users wrote in the performance guide for D&D/freak set-up.
I have now closed up the mixture screw and settled on somewhere around 3 turns but I have now noticed that the right side header pipe is running a little hotter (more blueing), is this caused by carb syncronising. Should i get them balanced?

Anytime you mess with the carbs you should sync them.

When in doubt, balance them out.

Couldn't post the pics because they came out to big for the BA site. Will work on cutting them down or figuring out another way.

I know this is derailing but... I have been using Microsoft office picture manager lately. One: because it came on my work computer... and 2: because it has a function to downsize the photo and you can pic "web page" as an option. Perfect size for the site...

If you are running XP, Microsoft has a number of free utilities that can be downloaded here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspxOne of them is the Image Resizer about 3/4 of the way down the above link page. Click on the exe file on the right. Save it to disk and then double click to install. Once installed and in Windows Explorer, you can right click on one or many JPG file(s) and choose Resize Pictures. There are size options at that point. Very cool utility. btw, this does not work on GIF formatted pics.

I knew there had to be a way but rarely do I fool with pics. My kids probably could have done this quicker than I. I'll try again tonight. Thanks for the help.

Bonnyusa thanks for the site. That resizer worked perfect. I'm posting the second dyno runs to see if it will come out in the post but both are in my gallery. Torque was 48.1 at 68.6 HP (OK so I lied but 69 sounds better)

Thank's Frank, Basics are freak kit, AI out, 160 jets, stock needles with one shim, mix screw about 4 turns out, stock pilots, JC Whitney 32" pipes and I put a set of Iridium plugs just a couple of days prior to the pulls. I also run 18th sprocket and high octane always. I think as I said things were about perfect that day but I'd have been just as happy with 65, 66 which can be hard to get.

Jango, is your Speedmaster an 865? You said you were running a 18T front sprocket, is yours a 42 or 43T rear sprocket?

RamSound it was 03 Speedy 790. As too rear sprocket, it's whatever came on the bike. Did Triumph produce some with 42 and 43? I can always check it and let you know but perhaps someone knows the answer.

All the 790 SMs had 16/42T but the new 865 SMs come with 16/43T. So, if you changed to an 18 front you are running 18/42T.

RamSound, I guess I need to pay more attention. I may just make a change in the future and go with the 43t rear. With my setup I may have added benifit with that set up.
