Does anyone know of a larger tank for a speedmaster that wont require a lot of work to mount it? I'm Thinking of painting my bike want to keep my tank as is(yellow & black) If I have to replace it, might as well get a bigger one. Getting tired of having to stop first for gas

This seems to be a hot topic at the moment, a few people looking at cutting welding etc to get what they want.. I like the idea but do not want the work that goes with it.

You know, I pretty much just leave my tank on reserve all the time. I don't know many if any bikers that can do 150 miles without a break ...

If you can borrow one to try, I reckon the Thunderbird tanks might fit, and they look bigger. No reseach done in this other than having a look at a TBird I saw parked next to my America once.

I don't have the figures to hand but I would be surprised if the T'bird tank was any bigger internally. Externally they are quite large but there is a big cut-out underneath for the coolant reservoir IIRC.

The T-bird tank holds 15 litres (3,9 gallons) and the SM/America tank holds 16.6 litres (4,4 gallons).

Beware of trip odometer roll back Yota's in the night!
Who was it that got some untoward amount of mileage on the petcocks main setting? (Only to discover that she had been running on reserve!) Shari was it? (mert)

I NEVER run it on reserve intentionally. Good way to get stuck somewhere! As far as tanks go, ours is pretty big I think... Not huge, but 4+ gallons is pretty good.

Agreed. Moving the lever to the middle position of it’s swing has a major ah factor.

WHATS YOUR GEARING? STOCK? If you have a speedy its lower than the BA. If your worried about distance go up 3 teeth in the counter shaft. I get all the TQ i need two up from stock. dont wanna go that far, go up two. or gear to the BA.
w/ my gearing 2 over stock i have gon 145/50 b4 res. and ran it dry at 165/70. why ruin a classic tank? at 150 im always ready for a leak and a strech.

If you're absolutely looking for a bigger tank, I think there's no easy way. You're going to have to fab something.
If you're simply looking for more range, get a Tour Tank. That will get you a conservative 225+ between stops and that's before hitting the stock internal 1 gal reserve. The large tank is suppose to be 3.5 but I've only been able to get 3 in.

I was the same way until somebody told me that using the reserve position might be a good idea to make sure it doesn't clog up somehow, so when you really need it you know it's going to work. Once every few tanks I'll run it on reserve from the start, and keep a close eye on the trip odometer...which I do anyway since I use it as a gas gauge. Every 100-120 miles I fill up and reset the trip odometer.
I've only ran out of gas once, with Dwight. Strange that one as I was only showing 135 miles on the odometer when I coasted to the side of the road, but then I was trying to keep up with Dwight on his Sprint most of the day, and that was after running 85 mph up I-15 from Phoenix to Prescott which is one big long uphill. I think I only got about 30 mpg on that tank, where I normally get 40.

I'm in agreement with that Sal. Except in winter, when I try to keep it full between rides, I don't fill until I've hit reserve and run a bit of sauce through the bottom hole. Occassionally, usually group ride pit stops, when I haven't hit reserve, I'll run a few miles on reserve immediately after the fill. It could be all hog wash, but, I believe the chance is there for some sediment build-up if you don't 'bottom feed' once in a while.

I always went to 150 before reserve til I re-jetted. Now I go to 143 almost exactly every time. City riding, interstate, WOT every chance I get. Stock gearing.

Have already installed 18 tooth sprocket it helped, I guess I ought to work on my riding habits! I'll probably just paint what I've got When/if I ever decide exactly what I want to do.
