The centre is expected to hit land in about 5 hrs but it will already be really bad up there (1,000km further north than me).

I wonder how many homes and buildings can withstand over 300km per hour winds - not many. The flying shrapnel will be lethal and hugely destructive.

People have basically been told to either evacuate or go to the smallest strongest room in their homes. The shelters are full and turning people away. !!!

The storm surge is expected to be 3 or 4 metres on top of the 3 metre high tide,

EDIT: It's now predicted that the storm surge will be 7m on top of the high tide - that's a 33ft high tide driven by 200mph winds. !!!

Heck - your BIL is directly in the line of fire. I think this is going to be a hugely devastating disaster with a lot of lives lost - I hope I'm wrong.

The latest I've read on the BOM site (Bureau of Meterology)
is that it has slowed down to 26kph or was that 36kph anyway that means it will take longer to pass over the affected areas . How is a house going to stand up to being belted by up to 250 kph winds for 4 hours with all the airborne crap smashing into stuff. Not a good scenario at all.
No man can stand up against a bushfire , flood or cyclone in the lucky country .

God help them .

You folks down under have been hit with a lot here, lately.

God bless you all, and please keep us updated here as you can.

Despite the Big Freeze here, you all are most on my mind as I write this. I'll be monitoring the damage as best I can.

You are all in my prayers.

It's now been 8 hours since Mo started this thread. Let's hope this storm was overestimated!

The latest word from my sister inlaw is that all the windows on one side of their house have been smashed out and whirllybirds on the roof have been blown off so the house will be full of water .
Tony and Lee have come over to Kalgoorlie for a 50th birthday bash so have to sit back and wait till they can get home and start cleaning up.
His Triumph was put in the shed between two trucks and tied in place by his son who lives nearby ... the shed never lost it's roof as that was replaced after the last cyclone they had 4 years ago.
A good thing but you can't live in a shed ... you can but it not the same.

The day after Yasi- no deaths or injuries and main damage to a number of small towns -tully-cardwell-mission beach-silkwood etc-clean up has started and the damage in some places has been less than cyclone Larry 5 years previous.
A miracle that their was no one killed but the warnings and buildup were pretty intense. The storm surge in heavily populated areas did not come near to what was predicted so that would have had a direct bearing as that is where the most deaths are caused.
