milo, Henry, Marty, Big Larri and the Fender bros have a new(used)kid to hang with.
i just picked up a Gretsch g5122 for a sweet song. gonna noodle on it for a week or so then decide if it will take up stable status for the long haul.
twang me up!

That Gretsch is going to sound good as long as it is set up well. I play Bass and had many over the years but keep coming back to my old Fender, That is "Christine". I even go as far as to sell the other ones off so I got two bass one accoustic and one electric. The accoustic is a dean cheapy but I use it at the beach and camping. you know stuff that you would not want to do with a nice one.

I always liked those Bigsby equipped Gretsch's. Very nice twangy sound for Rockabilly and R&B.
I'm envious....my guitar buying days are done. I still like to look though.

That is a sharp lookin' gee-tar . One of the band members at church plays that type of guitar. And yes, I've been coveting it. Funny, about this time last year I saw a post about G.A.S and online lessons. A year later, I have an electric guitar and enjoy playing the blues (although my wife isn't that impressed).
Didn't buy into the hype, you can keep the change.

Not a bad use of a Gretsch I suppose The outfit is optional.

it's the Bigsby that led me to swirlatornadoofragingexplatives, not the tuners. the stock tuners are not super grippy, but i have a set of open back Grover's that were too short for milo. i hope they'll fit on the Gretsch.

Very nice guitar Mert, its a black art keeping it in tune tho, good luck with that. Keep the nut slots and the bridge well lubbed with a lead pencil and that will help a lot.

Get your ruler out and measure from the nut to the 12th fret, then use that measurement to place the leading edge (of the center) of the bridge the same distance from the 12th. Should give you a good starting spot...then it's just a matter of twisting the diagonal angle of the bridge piece to get the best overall intonation. A little pencil graphite in the saddles will help with the Bigsby once you start dive bombing.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Hey Shari, those floating bridges can be a bit of a pain. I found this video which should help you get the intonation set up properly.

i think i might be a truss rod thing. i can get the 1st and 6th strings intonated but the 5th and 4th are way out from the 12 and up. made an appointment with the guitar doctor for sunday. someone want to explain the graphite thing to me? i could look it up -- but i like it when you guys all harmonic in! PS: thank you for all of your interest, commentary(Kenny ) shared excitment, gender bending, etc.

Typed in BMaj7 with a NAS / Damien Marley hip hop groove:
Graphite is a dry lubricant Pencils are made of graphite A little bitta graphite makes the windings all slip and slide up over the bridge and nut

b'cuz i said so? Failing that succinct explanation: If the string hangs up on the bridge or nut, you'll go out of tune once it finally makes it's way over one or the other. Example - the tuner pulls the string at 121 lbs between the tuner and nut. The string hangs up a little at the nut, and between the nut and bridge it's pulled at 120 pounds. Cool! 120 lbs means We're in tune. At some point, usually half a bar before your solo in front of that scout from Rounder, the string's tension will equalize along it's full strung length, and will make it's way down not to your intended 120 pounds, but more like at 119.13 lbs, and now you're in micro tonal territory, & wishing you were Fernando Saunders, with a fretless guitar no less. Poor Fernando - had he only put a little bitta graphite on that nut... Tune talk conjugation: When all is well, "We" are in tune When it is not, "You" are out of tune Only kindly and elderly kindergarten teachers ever say "we" are out of tune. And they're just being nice so "we" don't cry...

Here's an easy truss rod adjustment technique: take the leftover bit from string #1 and use it as a feeler gauge. Capo the first fret, fret string #6 at the last fret and slip the "feeler gauge" from #1 between string #6 and the 7th fret wire. Easy peasy after that; tighten the truss rod to reduce the neck relief or loosen to increase the relief using your new feeler gauge. Bonus: makes it easy to check the neck when changing string gauges
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

Here's a song that wants to be finger picked on that ol' Gretsch, but with the band playing it with an R&B / torch song groove & maybe a bossa nova drum thing. You could hang the lyric a half a 1/4 beat back and still be in the pocket. You'd have 'em weepin' in the aisles. It's pretty much an R&B song to begin with. Picture Gladys Knight kickin' it, and there you go. Dang it - I should be a producer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pg3iA1zzeE8&feature=relatedThat boy sounds more like George Jones than George Jones.

i saw part of one reply. went back to my email, re-read what he wrote, came abck to ba, hit refresh, then there was nothing.
whattheheckamiinhaling?
dunno, friend. i'm gonna hafta listen to another version. i like RT's voice, but that video was pure schmaltz. couldn't watch it. therefore couldn't get myself to listen to the whole song.
