It is a strange feeling waking up in the middle of an intersection in a puddle of your own blood ...knowing you are alive yet wondering how.... but for the grace of God I believe.

Freedom underwent some serious imjuries and so did I. If I'd managed to escape without the ankle getting messed up I would have been back on the front line a long time ago.

Hindsight being 20-20 I'd a told the trauma surgeons to take it two years ago. That would have saved a lot of money and angst. Oh well.

Yeah Kevin, but you might at least take some comfort in knowing that after all was said and done, and after all the attempts to save it, you NOW know it wasn't to be. And, if they didn't try and save it and did amputate it immediately after your accident, you might have always wondered "what if"...right?!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

That is true Dwight. The "what if" question always remains. It is 4:27 AM and its time for the drugs.

I have a prescribed cocktail mixture of Percocet, Oxicontin, (slow release), Gabapentin (supposed to suppress phantom pains).....

I also have to wean myself from the percocet in 2011 as soon as the pain from the stump subsides. Because I have been on the stuff for so long I am a legal addict. I will soon be cutting back the dosages and the duration between ...and slowly reduce the physical dependency.

One more thing in common with Limbaugh.

Of course, you're legal

Bill. Good post. I think it is safe to say that Rush must have had problems reducing his dosage and getting away from the stuff. LOL

Oxy/Hydro ...all those are very physically addictive. After two years I have a strong tolerance for Percocet. Two each....(if I am having pain that is in the 6 range on a scale of 1-10) will relieve that pain to a degree for about two hours and it takes an hour for maximum blood absorption.

I admit to a desire to boost the dosage at those times. Thankfully my pain levels are beginning to diminish.

Once its gone for good I intend to immediately halve my intake and increase the duration between dosage....find the current onset of initial withdrawal symptoms and start working it.

John. That is an interesting motivational poster.

I try to inject that type of humor into my conversations with co-workers and friends. The folks that work in the Lap/hone department at Sargent whom I have pushed/harangued so unmercifully over the years jokingly asked if they could have their piece of the leg .... I told them "heck yes in a pickle jar."

Hey Kevin,
Glad to hear your making progress. It's a slow and painfull process. Stuff that don't work now will heal in time.
It's been almost two years (6/3/09) since I french kissed the skool bus. I too had three spinal breaks and numerous facial injuries, and almost lost my left leg BK (compartment syndrome). I rebuilt Bonnie for the second time (both were total loss) and she still sits unridden in the back of the garage. Wife says she'll divorce me next time my leg swings over the saddle (Says she tired of watching me almost die).
I have located the loudest horn available, wig-wag for the light bar and found a saftey green armoured jacket for just in case scenario......
Heal well my brother, and always keep moving forward.
I'm sure you (as well as myself) saw many more people in more dire straights than ourselves and should honor their pain as we carry on.
Ed

Yes. I am always amazed at what other people put up with. At times especially little children who have medical "issues" that make mine seem like a stubbed toe by comparison.

My wife is supportive of me getting back on a bike...(not so her mother) ....so I look forward to the day.

Kev, it's great to see you back.
So sorry to hear about the ordeal you've been through.
We wish you the very best in all you do. Hope to see you back on 2 (or 3) wheels again some day.

Merry Christmas to you and your family.

In fact, Merry Christmas to all here. Ride safe gang.

I am gonna use Fast Eddies six inch Triumph Decal as the decorative trim on the sleeve that covers the socket on my prosthetic leg. I dont have the leg yet but should take delivery in the next 10 days.

The decal is Yellow with a black trim outline. What color should I make the background color of the sleeve? Light blue perhaps. ??

That is a pretty cool idea Kev. What color was your bike? Maybe that is the color you should use.

Kevin. Pleased you are on the mend. One of my riding buddies has a below the knee op, and Keith is the local Ulysses President.

My now long deceased bike (trust me it died on impact) was black. I am not sure that black is the best background color.

We'll see. There is a startup company out of San Francisco just getting started. They make hi-tech fairings for BK amps. I am going to look into those after the leg is broken in for three months or so. Bespoke Innovations is the name I think. They have some really cool looking fairings that they make by doing a scan of your good leg so that the fairing emulates exactly.
