Before I dive in. What is the best (fastest) method of removing powder coating from parts like the sprocket and peg covers?
Blasting, sanding, chemical?

I have heard the shops do a combination of both bead blasting and chemical strippers

I used Eastwood "Automotive Paint Remover" on my painted fork legs. It also removes power coating.
I may experiement with polishing my OEM cam cover and strip with this stuff. $7 per can from Eastwood.

Find a good stripper (no pun...). I did before polishing my fork legs. I used one intended for removing bottom paint on boats and it was like a gel that had to sit on for twenty minutes and then the paint was easily removed with a soft wire brush. Hope this helps!

Thnaks guys.
It looks like chemicals are the way to go. I'm glad I asked because for some reason I had in my mind that powder coating was resistant to strippers. I would have tried that last!

The best way is using an angle grinder, LOL.

Seriously, I use the Aircraft remover. I get it at walmart for about 3 bucks a can.

Man, you must be fast because you were haulin' A$$ when I passed you back there. . .

FRYGUY,
Angle grinders are great for removing the membrane on the backside of a slab of raw ribs also - but I wouldn't use Aircraft remover on the ribs.

Another good method are the small Scotch-Brite discs with an air grinder. These things really eat through tough paints like powdercoat and DuPont Imron, without too much effort. I try to stay away from the chemical strippers that hide in tight crevices. They tend to remove the new paint job too if you're not careful to remove every trace of them!

I agree with Tom.... I always try to avoid strippers if possible. I have the RoLoc attachments I put on my die grinders and it eats the powder coating like it was just a layer of dirt... hehehe
Another benefit of "grinding" the powder coat off is that in the process you are smoothing out the base metal as well.

If an item is going to be painted, I could see the logic of not wanting to use a stripper. Ok, I don't want to use a stripper either as I truly repect them for who they are. But I digress. Anyhow, I would think that using a stripper for items you planned on polishing would be fine. I would think that with all the other materials that will be used during the polishing process that you can be pretty sure that all the stripper material is gone. That is of course provided that you are doing a thorough polishing job. Correct?

Alright, I'm in. I bought the polishing stuff at the bike show last weekend. The forks are off the bike. I spent this evening stripping them. Started wet sanding the shrouds too. Man, they look good already. Can't wait 'til they get buffed and polished. The lower forks I can see are going to be a bit of a bear to prep for the polishing but I think it will be well worth it. I guess I need to have something to do anyways until the freak kit arives from Brent. She is all torn aprart as is and looks pretty sad. Can't wait until I get the rear all taken apart as well. I think she'll be getting some cleaning in places she normally doesn't get touched.

Good move. I didn't wet sand my shrouds and they don't have the brightness I would have like. Yanking the forks off one more time this weekend when my 12mm socket arrives. Should have done it right in the first place!

Alright, started prepping one of the forks tonight. Had out the ol' dremel tool, some 400 grit and some 1000 grit paper. tried using the stainless wire wheel to clean things up, with a beam and coke nearby. Sanded with both grits until the the hand cramped, and then I would "sip" some of my beverage. Spent a couple hours doing this and still don't know if I am happy with the results. Seems like you can still see some of the blemishes from the casting process, granted, smooth as hell but still appears a little rough IMO. Is this normal and will things work out through the polish and buff process. Do I need to just sit out there for a couple two three hours prepping this thing or should I just go at it. I figure worst thing that could happen is that after all that polishing I may have to go back wet sand and repeat the process. Gonna' go out Thursday (I hope) and prep the other side. Goal is to get it back together by the end of the weekend and start on the handlebar wiring. Any comments, ideas and/or opinions are welcome.

I had some pitting/blemish around the fender lugs that I could not sand out. I used a 3M rayloc bristle wheel, yellow on my air grinder. Did a dandy job.

My fingers were in tough shape for nearly a week after this job. I finally learned to wrap each of my fingers on the paper hand with duct tape. I kept tearing the skin open, painful. Used up a bottle of new-skin each night in the process as well.

I'm going to re-do my fork shrouds this weekend. Picked up some stainless compound at Eastwood yesterday and will hit with some 1000 and maybe 1500 paper first this time. I'm going to try and pull my forks/wheel at the same time, so save some disassembly....

I set out to polish a set of SM risers yesterday.
I don't know what that coating on them is, but it's tough stuff.
Aircraft stripper wouldn't touch it.
Ended up sanding it off the first one.
That was slow going.
Maybe I'll experiment with an abrasive bristle wheel on the other.
