My God, my hands are sweating as I watched that thing. No way, any way would you get me to make a climb like that. I would freeze up completely.

Watching that makes my "private parts" feel funny.

That's "just" climbing an existing tower. Wonder how they bring the parts up there, and fasten them in place the first time, for others to climb!?

Space shuttle?

Could you imagine how hacked off you would be when you got to the top and realising you forgot to put your spanners or your lunch in the tool bag.

Could be worse if you needed to go to the toilet....could be worse for the people at the base of the tower.

I believe I could go UP with little or not problem. The heights do not bother me in the least. But DOWN could be an issue on that tower. I have to be able to see where my down foot is going and it looks like at some of those junctions you would have to "feel".

Why not just lower someone down from a helicopter for repairs???

I thought about that too. I guess it is cheaper to send 2 men on foot then one plus helicopter and pilot... must be a money thing!

If this were my job, I guess I would like to talk to the engineers that designed the access (or lack of) to the top of the tower!

I'd make them try to climb up for fun!

I wonder how they... ahem, erected the tower of that magnitude in the first place. From the bottom up or the top down?

I remember seein something on TV once about those towers and one of them had to have the antenna at the top replaced. From memory I think they had a big crane and pulleys and stuff to remove the old antenna and lower it down and reversed the process to put the new one up and in place. It was touch and go for awhile till they got the nuts and bolts in to secure it. Nerve racking job.

O. M. F. G. !!! I could not even watch that straight through. I had stop in the middle to get up, walk around and mutter to myself how insane those guys are and I wonder if they wear a parachute. The narrator noted the climber was hauling a 30 lb tool sack. I would say his sack had to be way more than that.

That was a good little video! His comment at the end about what he's afraid of made it even more interesting!

For me, the scariest bits were when he went from inside to outside, and when he climbed onto the top. I'd have had my safety line clipped on at those points for sure. As for the rest of the climb, a safety line would be more of a hazard than a help, but I'd want a parachute, just in case.
Could I do that job? Dunno, but probably not.

What wasn't noticeable was how wobbly the thing would feel.

All that just to change a bulb

That tower must move at least 3 or 4 feet on a windy day.
I fell off a 12' tanker one day, but landed on my feet & unhurt. (Meow) It ruined me for heights for some time after that.
