My friend, who rides an Indian chief just went and bought a Harley fat boy. And is proud of it? I don't get the facination with Harleys. When He told me I said "realy why?" He just called me and told me he did it yesterday he is going to send me a pic. Insane, You would think someone who rides an Indian would go for something different. Oh well you just never know when someone is going to go off.

Another kool-aid drinker.
Was it a real Indian or one of the newer ones?

Saw several of the new Indians up close and in person at Americade last year. Very cool. Pricey too. Don't know why you would go for a Fat Boy over one of those.

I'll give ya a few reasons why, Dave...
The Harley is more refined and is smoother running, as from all reports I've read in magazines(and confirmed by our very own Keith up in BC after he took a demo ride on a new Indian) the solidly mounted, non-balance shaft PowerPlus motor makes the Indian vibrate like a real son-of-a-gun.
The Harley costs less.
The sheer number of Harley dealerships located throughout the country would make owning the Harley much more convenient for servicing.
(..and yep, I too have always loved those postwar deco-styled closed-in fenders on the Indians, but closed-in deco-styled fenders do not make a motorcycle "great" alone)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Those are some pretty good reasons, Dwight. $30K is a lot to drop for a vibrating piece of Iron that you have to take 500 miles for servicing. Those Indian's sure look good though...

His is a relatively new modle in the 2000s. Its a real Indian though made by Indian not s&s or anything like that. Its a classy ride.

The bike could be a Gilroy (what I affectionately refer to as a Killjoy) made between '99-'03 or the new one made in N. Carolina starting in '06 I think it was. Either way I'd MUCH rather ride the Harley over the Indian. Don't get me wrong... the Indian is one of the prettiest bikes ever made imho, but... BUT it stops there. The Killjoys (if that's what your friend had) had terrible paint and chrome and when they did end up using the Powerplus motor it was typically good for less then 10,000 miles. The latest Indians use a much improved Powerplus but the bike in general is terrible. TERRIBLE!!
Your friend made a good choice, smart fellow!

That's a shame. Would be great to bring a name like that back into the US cruiser market. Add some variety. $30K for a good looking bike that performs terribly won't do it.

I agree. When I test rode that big ol' Vintage Chief my heart just sort of sunk. It popped my bubble I guess you could say.

I would much rather have a Kiwi Indian than a Gilroy or whoever owns the company now.

I dont really know much about Indians. I never had one and don't know anyone else who does. I know they look good and I have never heard a complaint about the quality. I would only ride a Harley if there was nothing else but Jap bikes. I would take a harley over a beamer I guess, just to much plastic crap on them.

Depends on the BMW, I love my 1964 BMW. Only plastic on it is the little slide that covers the key hole. Only chain is the on the pulls the throttle cable.

The new ones do look nice from what I've seen on their website.Hopefully they have worked out the issues with that Powerplus engine as the Gilroy ones had a lot of issues and they are still using their designs. I can't believe they that freaking expensive though. At those prices in this economy they aren't going to sell many.

Being almost hand-made, they're not making many either. And they do seem to sell well despite the price tag.
Like with most bikes these days, a smart shopper would be better off waiting until they offer sale pricing on leftover & demo models.
Can't wait to see them again at the NY Motorcycle Show in January!

the plastic statement was made about the newer models. I am actually thinking about buying a 78 beamer 750. Its an ugly bike but kind of has an awkward coolness to it. The only plastic is the windjammer (stock) and the hard bags also stock. the little side plates are aluminum which I think is cool. Oh it has a little plastic dash with the key and dummy lights on it.

wow... not often a person can find a use for that phrase... lol. seriously, though, I'd only take a new Indian if it were free... and then only to sell for two or three nice bikes. Fatboy, eh... softail, so definitely not my first choice.

Mine even has the Earls front end Chad so mine is really ugly/cool, When I first saw it it was so ugly I had to have it. I have never had a problem with it and all I did when I bought it was clean it up and bolt a few loose parts back on. It is slow but I love riding it.This is what it looked like the day I brought it home, only had 7,000 miles on it. I found it sitting out in the weeds, had it running in less than an hour.

That one is tremendously ugly my friend. It does have a odd charm though. The one I am looking at isn't that ugly but its ugly. I like the front end on it.

I feel that greatest concern with any Indian owner (except maybe those with S&S engines) would be the cost and availability of replacement parts and the very limited dealer network.

Dead on the money here. My Speedmaster is my favorite bike because it was my brother's, but my Fat Boy is the best, most reliable machine I've ever owned and it's 13 years old. The new ones are unbelievable. If you don't like them, you probably haven't ridden one. That said, I think I'll be adding a new Thunderbird to the fleet this year, but I'd never part with any of the bikes I already have. I love all bikes!
