Anybody remember these? I use to have a set on an old hot rod of mine.

Those were illegal here when I had my '41 Ford, so I put lakes plugs on it. Extensions from the head pipes that came out under the doors with metal caps bolted on for street use. I had the caps on with 1 bolt and self locking nuts, and they were strategically placed so that the could be kicked shut when getting out of the car.

I saw a photo not long ago of a police motorcycle garage around 1918. There was a huge sign that said, "KEEP YOUR MUFFLER CLOSED!"

Recently saw the DIY option for this I think. It involved a washer welded to a bolt that was mounted inside the pipe via a small hole for the bolt in the bottom of the pipe. The idea was to turn the bolt thereby turning the washer inside the pipe, varying the "baffle" effect. The theory sounds good to this ignoramus !! In practice I'm not so sure.

Basically the same idea. Usually guys used them when they were draggin. Go to the track open up the dump outs, Off the track you switch back to the full exhaust. In theory it was to save you the hassle of switching exhaust systems between both. It was hard to find a happy medium at times with the dump outs.

Geez, cut outs.... Brings back some memories! I had them on a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 I owned. Raced it at New England Dragway waaaaay back when. Blew rear ends out of it like you change underwear.

Looked exactly like this one:
