Has any one on here ever had any problems with their speedo drive gears going bad? I was riding last night when I noticed a grinding sound coming from my front end, I leaned forward to listen more closely and noticed my speedometer going hay wire and pegging out even though I was only going about 35 mph. I did put new tires on about a month ago and shortly after my speedometer was funky but I found the speedo cable to be loose and it was fine after tightening. Any info or suggestions would be great.

I had to replace my speedo cable once, but all parts wearout and break so its quite possible.

The speedo on my '03 would go crazy (even at only 2000 km) and would peg out whenever it felt like it. In my case there was no grinding sound... simply a faulty instrument and apparently I'm not the only one. I eventually ditched the speedo for a digital one.

The speedo drive at my front wheel went bad last summer. The washer with the ears that engages the wheel and drive went bad and took the drive with it when it did.Got a low mileage drive from Pinwall for $14 and been fine ever since.

Obviously, be sure it's seated properly before replacing parts. If it's not seated right, the speedo will not work correctly.

Make sure the cable is seated properly. Its easy to do but you probably over tightened the knurled connector on the back of the speedo. I had the same problem. Loosen it by 1/2 a turn and see if it gets better, then 1/2 more etc.

When those ears break off, the bearing can get chewed up.

I took the front wheel off and everything looked good. I greased everything up and reassembled. Bill I took your advice on making sure the speedo cable wasn't over tightened, as I will admit I have a tendency to over tighten everything. So far everything seems okay and i haven't had any more issues. I did order a low miles speedo gear drive from Pinwall for $15 just in case as my bike is approaching 30k.
