Broke another chain guard yesterday, this one did'nt get my back tyre. But had to leave it at a cafe in the hills, I might look at bolstering the rear lug or rubber mounting the whole thing.

4th one to date since 2004. (22000 kilometers).

Wow! Maybe just ride without one? I turfed mine and never looked back. Still though... they shouldn't break.

there are plenty of pics of the broken ones in the thread "Broken chain guards, how many?", but here are the pics I took of the new redesigned one. You can see how it's no longer one solid pressed piece, and the tabs are way thicker than before.

I took mine off when I put the belt-drive on.
Was afraid it would break and cut the belt.
That new one looks stronger.

thats wierd I cant even guess what would cause the chain guard to break

Mine have not broken but the screws like to back out. Locktight to the rescue.

Its the bend itself. It was made using far too sharp of a bend. It should have a radius.

It's been a while since a break has been reported, so the new design must be an improvement. Mine broke no where near the new gusseted section, but rather on that small tab mount hole.
When mounting my replacement, I bought a small chrome washer, and cut it down to fit that slanted angle. So far, no problems or evidence of fatigue.

Mine broke at the hole too. You can see the new design has more steel there at the mounting hole, and the steel is a larger gauge than before. Very stiff.

High frequency vibrations....Balance your carbs girls and guys. I haven't loctited anything and nothing has ever fallen off my ride or broken.

Now my old BSA had everything fall off it every fill up. Lower cylinder fastener nuts, horn, zener, fender, etc etc. I even had a spark plug blow out of the cylincer head once and hit me in the chest when I was standing beside it. Vibrated like you know what. Didn't know anything about Loctite then.

Your right Mountainman poor engineering, I have another chain guard but it is not one of the new ones, so I will either leave it off (illegal here)or make my own. As long as I keep the chain clean the bike looks ok without it.

If Im going to stop the vibrations I will need to put the original cams back in, but I have seen a few stock s/m that are running very smooth (no modifications) that have done in their chain guards.

It seems to me that the chain guard is static and has no forces acting on it. What stresses a chain guard enough to make it break? Can maybe see the bolts getting loose...

Chain guard #2. Photographed at a gas Station in Pennsylvania with the English Yankee while we were en route to the New Hampshire Rally 2008.
