I was just at my local autp parts store and I saw a Valvoline oil filter VO7(fom a range of small cars) which is exactly the same external dimensions as my Triumph oil filter. I,m not sure about the thread but it looked the same. Has anyone had experience with these filters. I might go and buy one and check it out.

I go with the K&N's now, they have that little nut on the bottom that makes taking it off easy for oil / filter changes. Other than that, used the OEM filters, have no experience with these valvolines you're talking about.

I don't recall the Valvoline filter line getting very good reviews. I'd stick with the Triumph filter, NAPA Gold or Bosch.

Just did my first oil change on my '05 America, installed an "STP" brand for $3.29, and 4.3 quarts of Mobil 1 "V-TWIN" 15w-50 @ $8.00 per quart.....she's worth it....

No offense, but STP oil filters are bargain basement and not known as a quality filter. I'd opt for a NAPA Gold, K&N or Pure One filter for a few bucks more. The Triumph filter is actually pretty decent and was less than the NAPA Gold or K&N ($10 now).

I think STP filters like Bosch, Mobil and SuperTech are made by Champion filter company in Japan. Better than average in most tests. Champion makes most of the OEM filters for the major Japanese motorcycle companys. This is not the Champion of Spark Plug Fame but a completely different company.

NAPA Gold 1358(Don't use Napa 1365 it doesn't fit correctly-You'll have oil blowing past the seal because the screw fitting is convex and the filter won't seat correctly)

You are right, the STP isn't bad. The Bosch is apparently a step in filter quality but the Wix (NAPA), K&N, Mobil 1 or Pure 1 filers are even better for a few bucks more. Some interesting filter points here:

i'm using a wal mart super tech-- 2 bucks. rated very good on the previous post web site.
can't go wrong w/ a pure one though. i'll probably go back to those.

Just found your info on the forums. Thanks for confirming my problem. Put a 1365 on my bike yesterday and oil going right by the seal. Figures when you have a 50/50 chance I'd take the wrong one. Now I have to decide whether to drain the oil and reuse it or buy four more quarts. Probably the latter.

Speaking of oil filters.....has anyone used or contemplated using a stainless steel reusable filter. I hear they do a better job of filtering the oil. You just clean em and reuse them. They would pay for themselves over time.
Pricey ..yes but better filtering and they last a lifetime.

Don't fit the re-usable filter - they only filter down to 40 microns and are basically crap. 40 microns is like pouring sand into your engine  . Also the cost of proper paper ones is so low it would take you ages to make a saving. There was a good link on this somewhere - I will try to find it. Regards Jan
