I don't feel like being a "big boy" any more! "Biketoberfest" weekend here. My friend came by last night on his Buell and wanted us to meet up with his friends in Ormond Beach this morning, go to Sebastian Inlet, spend the night there, and hit Daytona Sunday. I told him the America was down, and the GS wasn't up to that much travel without some tuning. So to preserve my manly ness, my son's and I were going to take the dirt bikes to Ocala tomorrow. Well, the quad & one of the dirtbikes are ready, but one wouldn't run without "popping" REAL bad. So we're going with just the two. Then, after pulling the trailer out to load up, the taillight & marker light lenses are cracked, broken, and some totally missing. (how does that happen? they were fine last time I used it last summer). Then I notice the tag. Expired on my birthday in June. Well DA*#-IT!, I'M GOING ANYWAY! I sure can't afford a $100 + ticket for that expired tag, BUT I HAVE GOT TO RELEASE SOME OF THIS FRUSTATION in the dirt! This furlough day every two weeks for the last year is taking it's toll. What's worse is I KNOW I shouldn't complain. I do have a job, my family is RELATIVELY healthy, and I'm not in jeopardy of losing my home.(not yet, though the mortgage IS late. What's worse still is I do stupid sh1t like buying a Rocker shifter cause the price is too good to pass up. I'm 54, and wondering if I will EVER grow up. Just needed to vent. I feel better now. (NOT!)

I know the feeling. I'm 55, spent a week working on the BMW, wound up with 5 stitches in my finger, got pithed off, long story short, bought a Tiger the next day. Did make me feel better, though.

Well, me too when I bought my Trophy back in May. An impulse buy... thought I'd replace my TA with the Trophy. NOT!!!! I can't afford the extra bike but I have it (can't sell it with winter coming on). But cha know... it's all just part of being a kid!!

Garsh, you guys and your 2nd an 3rd toys,,,,,,Must happen AFTER THE KIDS! Im still trying to find the time to play. Between 2nd shift, all the kids stuff, and the honeydo list. I have not even gotten to freshen up the cosmetics on the bike or get the new battery!

The post was relating to the fact that with everything falling apart and not running, and no money to get the things fixed, I didn't want to "buck-up" and be a big boy, but felt more like throwing in the towel and just crying like a little boy. Not about the last sentence about buying things I shouldn't. But I'm over that now. We did get out today to ride in the dirt, even though only two of the dirt bikes would run right. Then what happens when we get there, the front tire of one of the two was flat! I checked all tire pressures when I loaded the trailer the night before, so I knew the tube was bad, and simply putting more air in wouldn't do any good. SO I RODE THAT B1TCH ALL DAY LONG FLAT!!! WHO'S A BIG BOY NOW, D@MN-IT!!!

Wow... that's HARD CORE dude!! And if ya rode some frustration off from all yer stuff breaking down and such, then it was worth it. Meanwhile... how's the diagnostics going?

Well, the riding day took up diagnostic day , but my furlough day ( ) this week is Tuesday, and I did get that timming light, so I'll probably PM you Tues. or Wed. I also plan on doing that Haines coil check. Thanks, and I'll let you know.

Hey Keith, I finally hooked the timing light up, and it shows the intermittent missing on both plug wires! The timing light strobe cuts out with the audible missing. I tried the coil check per Haynes, but I don't get ANY reading (ohms) out of the secondary side? (plug wire socket & positive side terminal from low voltage side), from either coil. So, I'm beleiving it's BOTH coils, as it's missing on BOTH cyl. I won't be needing your coil, I don't think, cause apparently their both messing up, so I'm leaning toward the CDI. Thank you very much for the offer though. Anybody know why I'm not getting a reading out of the secondary side of coils? Wouldn't they show SOMETHING, since it does run, just missing REAL bad. I'm convinced I've eliminated ANY possibility of fuel, or L.V. wire connections? There's ONLY 12K on the '05.

Did you use a seperate battery to power the light? On motorcycles you can get a false reading due to a pulse from the charging system.

No. Guess I'll go borrow that light again, and use a spare battery. Dang this diagnostic crap is fun. Any ideas about the "no reading on the seconday" thing?

You should get a resistance reading there but not infinite. Infinite would be a broken winding. I am not sure what the reading through our coils should be. Are you putting the leads on each secondary or trying to read from secondary to primary?

I believe I was doing straight from the book, which was open and in my lap. Positive probe from the ohm meter in the spark plug wire socket on the coil, and negative probe to the positive side of the coils low voltage connector. Battery removed from the bike. Just like the manual stated, and just like the photos. NETHER coil showed ANY reading!?

Intermittent on both could be fuel, or pick-up coil. Coil gap is 0.8mm (.031")

Yea, I ran out of time to check the coil gap, but definitely plan to do so, along with ANOTHER coil check. It'll have to wait till next weekend now. And wouldn't you know, the last three weeks have been the absolute BEST riding weather here in FL., Mid eighties, low humidity, and NO rain in something like a near record thirty days! I'm confident it's not fuel. Drained and refilled tank through to bowls just to be sure. Carbs were rejetted and cleaned about a year ago.

I got rid of most of my toys so, I could keep the others up. Still cant keep up with it all, and the wifes truck ac is on the fritz. I can relate.

You are welcome, but if your diagnosis changes and you really do think you need a coil ('cause I only have one good spare) let me know (although I must admit it DOES sound like the ol' proverbial CDI).

Being the "Glass half full" kinda guy (yea, right), I think of the money I'm saving, and keeping up with the Mortgage, not riding this fall. But then, being the "glass half empty" kinda guy (more like it), I know once I do get it figured out, It'll take a mortgage payment to fix it.
