Got a pair of 40 pilot jet going to try them. I read or heard that the frist ameirca had 40 pilot so here goes got 42's now. If I sit and ideal it will load up and when I try to take off it will die. But if I pop the throttel it seam to clear and take right off. After that my power curve is really good. I did get the code letters for the
America needls (1) and older thunderbirds(2). I don't know which needles I've got in now, changed to many times back a forth. Rudy

put a piece of clear plastic tube on the bowl drain and hold it up along side the carb. Then open the drain and the tube will fill to the level of the gas in the bowl. The level should be at just about the seam where the carb bowl meets the body.

Probably need to adjust the mixture screw rather than go smaller on the pilot and you always need to match the main to the pilot and make sure those are both what you need to go with and exhaust and intake mods.

Factory spec is 16mm - 18mm, measured from the bottom of the float to the gasket surface, with the float tab against the needle valve, but not compressing the spring. There is a certain technique & "feel" to doing that measurement correctly. There is also an art to adjusting float level to be uniform for both carbs.

You can lean the pilot circuit out a bit by increasing the float measurement to the larger end of the spec, thereby lowering the gas level in the bowl.

Ian's method is the quick way to see where the level is, & whether both carbs are set to the same level, & for that purpose it works well. If, however, you want to adjust the level, then you'll need to pull the carbs to do it.

The floats on my carbs were originally set to approx. 16.9mm & the low speed circuit works better on mine when set to 18mm. I don't know if that setting will work for your situation.

I should have been more clear that what I was posting was a quick check before disassembly to see if you needed to adjust the floats.

well I know it's not the coil or plugges(and the old plugges were sure black, really rice looking). I've cleaned the unico filter now and I hope I can go into the carb's tomorrow. With those new niogle coils it sure startes easy. going to change the vacum port plugges also just to see. One step at a time.Rudy
