I know, I know. I am about to open a can of worms. I have a 2007 TBA and I want take out the crossover pipe. I have read claims that it will not do anything (but change the exhaust note) to it will damage your motor.

From what I gather it will ghange the exhaust note and MAY take some hp or torque. If so how much are we talking?

GO

I doubt it will take enough to notice. I think Ian did this to his bike, I'm sure he can tell you.

Not good if you have the stock restrictive pipes . The only real benefit I've noticed with pluggin 'em up is the exhaust note . I went back to my crossover , even though my Thunderbike pipes are fairly open . I did notice a gain in torque .

What numbers are we talking? I assume it wont matter all that much with a street bike. And I assume it depends on your other mods but are we talking a handfull of hp/torque or is it a large chunck. I guess if my but dyno cant tell I am not that worried.

I agree, my thoughts on the crossover are the same. I believe the stock system has the cross over due to the stock pipes being baffled to comply with noise restrictions. As the cross over actually splits the exhaust through 2 stock pipes it helps it breath better. Therefore the more open your pipes are the less benefit the cross over becomes.

Anyway I have some mandrel bends on order which I'll be installing without a cross over, but they will be drag pipes with a baffle.

(P.s. the standard bonneville does not have a crossover)

I took the crossover out of my bike after I had the dyno run when I was tuning it. I ran it on a dyno again later with the same set up just to see if I needed to tweek it at all and the cross over being removed made no difference at all...0 change. I had the same torque and same HP as before I cut it out only difference was the exhaust note.

I am running open pipes and K&N pods.

I think the key point here is open pipes.
The cross-over pipe is needed with the restrictive stock pipes.
It splits the exhaust pulse between both mufflers.

My pipes are stock that have no baffles in them but do still have the reducer cone in for back pressure. The Sceptres with no baffles the Emgo/JC Whitney shorties slash or turnouts that I have seen would all be open.

I just checked manual and your correct, it does have a cross over, I assumed it didn't because of this D&D system I was looking at which doesn't appear to have one.

Very good summary mate!

the only change you're going to notice is the drop in pitch of the exhaust note.....a crossover doubles the pitch and makes it "less objectionable".....remember the difference in sound between the 650's and the 750's - back in the day?.....the 750 had a crossover and lost the low rumble of the 650......personally, I plan to remove the pipes on my 03 america and plug the crossover by spot welding a freeze plug in it...this will eliminate the crossover and will be easily removable.

lol...I'm only 28 so my day don't go that far back...haha...but I do know what you are talking about.... Thats why the 650 sounded better than the 750...and I think it will sound great on my 865

There is another thread going on about the removal of the crossover pipe. It might answer some questions for you. I did a post on that thread but here is a copy:

Here's a link to earlier posts concerning the removal of the cross over pipe: http://www.bonnevilleamerica.com/forums/...rt=all&vc=1

I removed mine about 3 years ago. Did not hurt the performance but changed the "note" of the pipe. I welded a metal slug over the hole. Never had a problem with it...

I do have some of my new exhaust (EPCO 32" turnouts) if anyone wnowes how to post them let me know.

Good thread. Good info. I've got these on order: http://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=18
(gonna wrap 'em and throw some 12" "shorties" on the end) and was wondering what havok that would cause to the bike. I guess not much (aside from the sound).

Ok I have sound clips and I am working on trying to get them uploaded so everyone can hear. I took them on my phone and it appears most computers are not compatible with the format.

If you want pm me your cell # and I will send them via mms text.

What I have is a 2007 America 32" x 3" EPCO turnouts with the cross pipe removed, snorkel removed and bottom of the air box/filter cut. The sound clips sound good, but I can not even begin describe the in person sound.
