Just read what I could find of how to change the springs in the front forks and wanted some reassurance because when I tried this once before: removed handle bar and tried the "bent coat hook" trick to pull them out, they would not budge. Thinking of trying it again and would appreciate confirmation that this is an ok way to change them out -- I have an '05 Speedmaster. Just worried because last time they would not budge. Any tips would be very welcome!

A lift or center-stand would be most helpful since it is much easier if you can compress the forks; then you just grab the spring and lift it out. Careful, they're covered in oil and will drip on your nice clean bike...

I've got a lift, but when the front wheel is off the ground, would that be "compressed" or "not compressed"???

Jack the bike up, tie it down, stabilize the forks (with a bungie or rope) so they don't flop about and put a floor jack under the front wheel so you can compress the forks completely once you have the caps off. The rest will be obvious from the point forward.

Non-compressed. I just did this the other day. Fished the old springs out with a piece of wire... it was super easy. It they seem stuck you can compress the forks as Ed suggested thus forcing the springs upward, but start out with the front wheel off the ground. Pull them out nice and slow with a rag at hand and you shouldn't drip any oil. Caution... DON'T GET ANY OIL ON ANY PAINT! Maybe cover the tank with an old towel or something for peace of mind.
