and how big of a pain in the butt is it? After switching back to chrome bars from black, an having a black sissy bar in back, it seems like i need some black up front to balance it out. Thinking of powdercoating the light bucket black and leaving the ring chrome.

Maybe I should elaborate. Take off the bezel, unplug the headlight and put it aside. Unplug the wiring harnesses inside there. Coax all wires back out through the hole in the rear of the bucket. Remove the two bolts holding the bucket in place and voila... ya got 'er off.

Sounds like it would look good, I took it off my old Honda, and my America looks like it would be just as easy. If a girl can do it... ;-)

Nope, just remove those two screws and pop it off. The top just clips on. You might have to pry the bottom free with a non-sharp object like a dinner knife or something. But it will just pop off.

You mean like this.

Dead easy to get the bowl off, you have to prise the rim off as previously said with a non sharp object which can be a bit scarry.
Good luck

I figure the painted bucket combined with the headlight extension mount from Newspeedmaster.com would look pretty trick.

Sounds good! When you remove the two screws to remove the bezel/trim ring there is no need to pry if off. Just twist and pull the bezel (less than a 1/4 turn)and it should come off without marring any of your headlight parts. It goes back on in the same manner. Let us know how it goes.

You might consider gluing (with a dab or three of silicone or caulk) a piece of wire loom around the full circumference of the hole in the back of the headlight bucket. The edge of the hole has a bad habit of gnawing through wires there, and the skinny rubber the factory installs is not too good at staying in place.

It's been done. Biggest problem is what to with all the wiring and connectors they jam in there. Most move them behind the steering head, under the tank.

Now we know where they got the inspiration for the new Speedmaster. Then they raided the parts bin for the headlight and taillight.
