Hi people,
I'm ordering a set of Avon 170/80B15 Venom and 110/80-18 Roadrider. Read some really good comments on these tires.
My question is, should I move up to the 110/90-18? Any advantages or disadvantages other than a more accurate speedo, which I don't really understand anyway?
Thanks.

The speedo, with a stock size front tire, reads a little faster than what your actually cruising at. A larger tire will slow down the tire revolutions slightly resulting in your speedo reading a slower speed which is a little closer to your actual speed. Hope that helps some.

R, Sorry I have no advice, but I have been thinking of doing the same thing. I guess I was going to go with venoms front and rear. Wondering what the reason for mixing was? Anyway if you decide to go with the avons would you please share your opinion of them? Thanks BW

I've also been following tire discussions and have about decided to go with Metzler but think I'll go from my stock 110/80 18 to the 110/90 18 like they put on the new America models. Other than making the speedo slightly more accurate, I'm not sure what other advantages (or disadvantages) there are going to the slightly taller tire. Triumph decided to stick with the 110/80 18 on the Speedmaster. If it's better for one, why not the other?

Most manufacturers do not carry the correct tire size in a single tread model for our bikes. For Avons and Metzlers I had to go to 2 different tire models. The Avon Venoms do offer 100/90-18 that will fit our bike, but the tire is even smaller than our stock originals - I didn't want that.
I'll have the new skins installed this week. Will keep you updated.

That's a good question, so I called the Avon tire rep. The tire tech's explanation was a lower profile tire is easier to turn and will have better handling but a higher profile is better for cruising. Makes sense as to why they put the smaller profile on the Speedmaster's and the higher profile on the America's now. Having said this, I'm going to stick to the original size 110/80 18 for my front.

Interesting. I originally figured the reason Triumph used Metzler ME880s on the rear and Lasertech on the front was that they didn't make a 110/80 18 ME880 (they also don't make a Lasertech 170/80 15). BUT, they do make an ME880 in 110/90 18 yet Triumph still chooses to use two different type tires.
It's hard to imagine that such a slight difference would be that noticeable in handling vs. cruising. I love the way my bike handles and have no problems cruising. Not too sure I'd want to give up anything. I'm so used to the speedo, being slightly more accurate does't carry much weight. Changes in bike performance would.

Tires were installed yesterday and went for a short ride (200KM)to Niagara Falls and back. After taking it easy for the first 50KM - to remove the "slickness" from the tires - I went through a few twisties and also had a chance to get on the highway. First impressions are very good. Overall, the handling, traction and ride was improved significantly - IMHO. THe bike seems to hold the line in a curve better and the ride is quieter/smoother as well.
Didn't have the opportunity to ride in the rain yet, but the roads around the falls are always wet and it didn't pose much of an issue.
Would I recommend these tires?....for sure!!!
