Well, the American leg of the Stretchermonkey US tour 2010 has been pretty good so far!

Today got a little bit better though.

We were in the process of purchasing a property in Savoy MA but due to the reliability of the realtor and the septic system on the property we pulled out.

When my missus was checking out the property she saw a bike in the back of the garage and the guy said he would sell it her for $200 so she thought it would be a good project to keep me out of trouble when I get out here.

Well I went to Savoy today to pick up some other bits n bobs from the property that she purchased off the owner and saw the bike.

I'll find out tomorrow the year of the bike when I get the registration documents, but it looks like I might be the proud owner of a 1974 or 75 Honda CB450.

Apart from replacing a couple of seals, gaskets and a little surface rust it looks pretty good and looks in its original state.

When I get it back tomorrow I'll pop a pic up of it but in the meantime anyone know much about Honda CB450's?

Otherwise I'm beginning to get a rough idea about what I'm in store for out here as all people keep talking to me about are snowblowers and the dangerous wildlife.

Thankfully we are looking pretty good for a nice property in Cheshire MA which would suit us perfectly, so fingers crossed here!

Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"

My son had a 76 CB 750, 4cyl. that was incredably fast. I rode a 450 for a short time up here in N. Ga. and it was a great little bike. It led me to buy my Shadow 600, but to be honest, the 450 seemed to be the stronger bike.

I know you will enjoy the bike after you get it cleaned up and running. A great classic. Congrats to you and you better give the Misus a big hug for spotting it for you.

Nice find! I'm interested how this pans out for you; as just last weekend a friend picked up a early '70's model CB that has been sitting in a shed for 30 years. I hope to get out there this weekend to check it out and take some photos.

All I can say is, prepare yourself you the winters here.

I moved over from Kent in Jan 2009 and was greeted to 18-24" of snow in the first two days.... and that was in the city.

"Out in the sticks" be ready for there to be snow on the ground (not necessarily on the roads) for 2 to 3 months of the year.

So make sure you get a property with a garage/workshop because you will have plenty of time for that restoration!

Good luck with the house search, Graham. I doubt you'll have much of a problem right now finding that perfect house, what with it presently being a buyer's market.

And, I also have to say what a cool find that old CB450 was. I always did like the looks of those DOHC vertical-twins. Nice looking motor in a nicely overall proportioned motorcycle.

(yep, that was back in the day when Japan INC was still making bikes which resembled a "proper" british motorcycle)

Good on you Graham (and better on your wife)

Remember just holler if you need a hand (or opinion) with the new home!

And holler if you need storage for the new ride till you settle in (now that Dills Savage and Aunt Cathys Silverwing are no longer living in the shed My bike gets lonely sometimes

Ok just picked it up.

It's a 1972 and only has 4000 miles on it - the title says it only had 3500 on it when it was sold in 2008 so that means it has been running fairly recent I guess which is good news.

Tomorrow I think i'm going to have a good look over it and see where I stand with repairs n stuff.

Anyhow heres a few pics of it.

I was suprised how heavy it was getting it on and off the back of a pickup.

I'm going to have a better look over it tomorrow. Even if it is totally shot to pieces I'll still get the value back in spares I reckon.

With regards to finding a house - all going rather well at the moment - could even have something sorted by friday

It doesn't look too bad for $200. Good luck on the restoration.

WOW Graham, that baby's in MUCH better shape than I at first thought it would be, considin' your wife paid only 200 smackers for it!

Lemme guess here...She had those 200 smackers in one hand, and a gun in the other...RIGHT?!

(...welcome to America, dude!)

What are ya apologizin' for, Matt?

Over the years, Big Red has made an awful lot o' great motorcycles, ol' buddy!

(yep, if it hadn't been for good ol' Soichiro, who knows how many less of us motorcyclists there'd be in the world today!)

Yep, that's true alright, Ed. However, after watchin' how those two negotiate for prices, I'd have to say they probably would've paid at least 2 Grand for that Honda.

(...especially if it would've belonged to some Good Ol' Boy who at first would seem to ya to be easy pickins, but later, like a lot of the time on that show, turns out eventually to be one tough negotiator)
