Help, I'm looking to buy a Rocket in PA but I live in NY. How does the transfer of the title work? Have any Non PA residents been through this experience?
Thanks in advance Eric

I would think it would be fairly simple just make sure you have all you're paperwork in order.
Just an old Hippie and I don"t know what to do.

Get a receipt for exactly what you paid, so the NY MVA can tax you correctly. Make sure it is not a lower amount than actual or they'll charge too low a tax. Get the bill of sale notorized if possible.

CYA: Best way is to have a state leo run the vin numbers for you. Call the PA authorities and ask em how to get that done. Clean title in hand and if you must, a Bill of Sale, belly up to the NY bar and give the state her triple dip. Trust the seller? Have the seller sign the Title over and ride home on his/her plate. Bill of Sale? asks the tax clerk. "Lady here's the title, I paid x grand for it." Mail plate back to seller.

In PA you are suppos3ed to go to a notary to get the title notorized and they handle the transfer. I'm sure as long as you have it notorized in PA you can then take the title to NY and have the rest of the transaction done. When notorizing a title in PA the notary will just ask you how much you paid for the vehicle, I have never been asked to produce any proof of that amount. You have to take the seller with you so it can be signed in front of the notary and there is a space on the back of the title that shows the amount you paid so that is notarized as well so that should make it so you would have no need for proof of amount after that. If you choose to make it a gift there is an additional form you have to fill out. Be careful where you go, notary charges are very low but some places charge thier own fees on top of that.

When I bought my Georgia truck recently, I first went to my local Florida DMV office and asked them exactly what I needed, if anything had to be notarized, etc. Learned some things and took an odometer form with me that saved me a wasted trip back to Georgia. Or, if the NY officials give you any trouble, just tell them you researched it on BA.com

The Dog is correct. Make sure you get your PA title notarized. The notary will want to see you and the seller in person in order to notarize it.

In Maryland, if you don't have a notorized bill of sale from the seller, you pay the tax on the book value of the vehicle. Even if it is a wreck, in pieces, etc.

The back of the PA title is notorized and the purchase price is on there to be notorized as well.

one word of caution... riding around on someone elses plate, even just to transport home, comes with a $500 fine in NY.

Moe Knows ! I purchased a Yamaha Venture "many moons ago" from a guy in PA......When I got it back to Oklahoma , Highway Patrol inspected for my title transfer and BINGO the bike had three (3) yes three (3) vin numbers on it......the whole thing eventually go straightened out but Moe's advice is a good one...that how I personally play it now.. good luck and "happy trils to you "
