I got a buddy who owns a motorcycle shop around here. He's got Triumphs, Kawasakis, and Ducatis mostly. We had a demo of the Streetfighter and well... I had to take it out for a spin. What are they thinking about??? That bike should not be street legal. It belongs on a closed circuit. The power, torque, handling of that bike make it a killing machine! I mean, 1mm of throttle and you are on your spirited way. 2mm and you are holding the handlebars so tight your knuckles are getting white. 3mm and the front wheel leaves the ground effortlessly. This is not a bike to be caught in trafic! Really! who needs that kind of power on the street... it's just insane... It's the perfect killing machine... End of soap box...

Sorry Jeff, I STRONGLY disagree.
'Cause ya see, ANY motorcycle in THE WRONG HANDS can be a "killer"!
And ya wanna know what I often find REALLY kind'a "funny"? Well, coincidentally there's this dude who goes by the name of "BSAchop" and who's been a regular at the Cycle World magazine online forum for years. He's a real "peach" of an extremely opinionated sort. The dude has many years of riding under his belt, but is mostly into H-D cruisers and old school choppers and such.
Now, BSAchop will sometimes interject some of his little political opinions into some of his postings over there at that website, and most of 'em pretty much are mutterings about "how this bad ol' government of ours with all their dictates are taking away our freedoms one at a time". Yeah, the dudes always cryin' about "them taking away our freedom of choice".
And YET, this moron..err sorry, much too strong a word to describe the guy, as he's really NOT all that dumb of an individual and actually isn't all that bad of a guy(when he keeps his friggin' political opinions to himself anyway), and so I mean "this dude" has stated many more times than once on that website that "somebody ought to ban some of these sportbikes out there!", 'cause evidently he mainly likes to slowly cruise around on his "cool lookin'"(THE most important aspect of any motorcycle according to him) machines.
YEAH! Ya see, the dude actually can NOT see that he's talkin' outta BOTH friggin' sides of his mouth!!!
And as I said, "coincidentally" just a few hours ago on that website I took him to task for that opinion o' his, and his inconsistent stances.
And ya wanna know what? I'm REALLY glad I did!!!
(...and now I'm just waitin' to see what kind of lame friggin' excuse he's gonna "think" up tomorrow to respond to my callin' him on his friggin' hypocrisy!..yep, it ought'a be a "real bright" friggin' response comin' from him, alright!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

True...
Any vehicle into the wrong hands can be a killer... From a 150cc to something like a Hummer.
I was just bedazzled at how much power can a Ducati Streetfighter come up with and wondering how many people can actually have a steady hand to ride one of those beast without getting caught in the "power surge"...
There are very few people I would trust to be "safe" on that bike, and most of them ARE racers. If you have the skills, then it is a beautiful sight to see them matched on a bike like this.
So, I guess I'm wondering just how far will bike companies take the race track to the street. I mean, some of the cars derived from F1 (those that can do 0-60mph under 3 seconds for instance) that made it to the road are just astronomical in prices, a privileged few can have access to them... That's not the case with motorbikes... That power is available to most... and most are not fit to handle that.
I know I can ride that beast, but I also know that it's limits are far beyond my riding skills.
Unfortunately, not everyone understand their limits...

A lot of people will see this bike, look at the specs and go something along the lines of "I gotta get me one of those" A very small number of people will have the skills and ability to use it how its meant to be used and keep it and ride it regularly. A slightly larger group will keep it in the garage because they love it but are too scared of it to ride it. Even more will take it out, go beyond their and the roads limits and go home in a box. Most will get one, find its beyond their abilities and sell it on, creating such a glut on the secondhand market that Ducati wont be able to sell any new ones and then stop production All this is of course the opinion of someone who has yet to see one in the flesh, never mind been on one

Then there is a Honda CBR 1000RR with more torque, higher revs and 170 HP to push it so fast your brain hurts. Some of these bikes are getting silly. But the technology is cool The Duc dressed up with all the toys is just under 20k though. lots of money! The base one is 14, an OK number.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

It's a force to be reckoned with... that is for sure, and would fair quite nicely through some o' these mountain passes and byways we tear through around here (Friar? Z? Am I right?). It shouldn't be on the streets, yer right. It belongs in the mountains instead!!!

That bike might have kept up with me on the stretch of twistys I scraped tonight.Saying it shouldnt be street legal is kinda lame.If the rider cant handle it then he/she will be road pizza,oh well. Its all a matter of choice. The speed triple is still better looking then that skinny Italian anyway!

It's nice when your own choice only affects yourself. It would have been nice if a choice had been offered to the family traveling when the rider and its bike crashed into their windshield, killing the rider AND the whole family inside.
I'm sorry if I sound too sentimental, but here I see more than my fair share of stupid and reckless accidents just because a driver/rider or whatever wanted to try something and didn't think of what might happen in the next second.
If someone wants to try something for the adrenaline rush and kills himself, that is his/her choice and I respect that (thinking about many mountain climbers the likes of Dan Osman who killed themselves doing what they loved best and didn't involve anyone else).
If one does something stupid and ends up killing a bunch more just because they had the infortune of being there at that time, or followed sheepishly ... then no, I strongly disagree.
But, now, I am far from my original post which was that I was amazed at the power these new bikes come up with... and just wondering (not telling) if these should belong more to the race track than the street (or mountains, Keith!).

Perceval:I feel the pain of that killed family. My very close cousin was killed outright and the father and brother seriously injured when a drunk harly riding idiot smashed into there car as they were backing out of there driveway. This crap happens.I am still all for personal choice and responsibility, the streetfighter is street legal which means it had to conform to whatever gov stds exist at the time to make it so.Most bikes are beyond the ability of new riders and many less able riders can never truly handle the speed and torque of most bikes.Does this mean there should be restrictions on what bikes one can ride at certain abilitys? You opened the discussion on this thread ,we are not far from the OP at all.The ducati is no more a deathtrap then a 1000 lb harly with a drunk or otherwise impared [I include the slow reflexed, old, inferm, young inexperianced, distracted, tired from a days work] human behind the the headlight.Bravo to the Ducati engineers who bring us such marvel as this bike and oters like it.It belongs on the street because it meets the standards.

I've ridden (driven) a few bikes and cars that were overpowered to the point that they required a great deal of care to keep on the road. I guess that's OK for some folks, but I just don't enjoy having to feather the throttle very carefully lest I end up sideways.

lol.. you looked pretty happy on it for a guy who resents its existence. do I think a squid with no experience should hop on one? of course not... no more so than they should hop on the new Gixxer 1000 or ZX10 or Hayabusa. but the option should be there for those of us that can handle it. and as far as accidents, i believe a recent study shows its more Harley riders than sportbikers simply due to market saturation. but if Im cruisin along in my wife's Nissan (to use the dead family analogy) Id much rather be hit by a sportbike that disintegrates on impact than 900 pounds of fairing and hardbags and heavy-a$$ v-twin tryin to climb thru my windshield.
