I'm not a paint or a finish guy, but want to black out some of the pieces on my bike. I know some guys just "rattle can black" parts, but how does this last over time? Specifically:
Lower forks, wheels, handle bar risers
fork shrouds
headlight housings

Anyone have success or failure stories they can share?

Well they say paint work is all about the surface prep and having patience. I'm usually too impatient to do a good job with either, but you probably want to sand the parts with a fine grade of sandpaper or steel wool before attempting to paint. Paint won't stick well to chromed surfaces unless its roughed up. I'll let other more experienced paint gurus weigh in with specific advice.

Check these guys out.

http://www.kustomrides.com/supplies/clear4chrome.html

they sell a two part paint,(clear 4 chrome) that you can paint over chrome without having to scratch the surface. Just remove the oils from the surface. You can add color if ya want.
It only comes off when you want it to.(paint stripper), nothing else touches it.

You mix your own(cheaper) or you can buy it premixed 2 part aerosol (pricier).

Check out the web-site(all)

Find a local powder coat guy. That is what most folks do.
